Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived. That's because I just arrived at my afternoon office via Uber.
Our man-with-his-ear-to-the-ground MVP Stephen Evans tipped me off to the presence of Uber in Waco yesterday and this afternoon I thought, "Well, what the heck?"
Now why would you, who came here to read a local food blog, care about the opening of a big box store?
Because many of us who like to eat also like to cook, and as much as I like HEB, we have a serious lack of grocery shopping diversity here in Waco, TX. I often find myself stuck in a culinary rut – hitting the same 10 familiar grocery aisles and cooking the same five dishes over and over. I’m excited for some new shelves to browse, and you should be too!
Guest blogger Katie Wolfe is a social worker in Waco. When she first moved to town eight years ago, she worked in the soda fountain at the Dr Pepper Museum. She now serves on the organization’s board of directors.

Coffee shops are the place to meet up and catch up on the latest buzz. But before the coffee craze, people gathered around a counter that served up something a little different – soda.
In football, the offense has a plan and it's the defense's job to react.
In that sense, a couple of restaurants in the McLane Family Stadium immediate vicinity will be playing defense on Sunday. Ok, I admit this is a flawed metaphor as Baylor and these two local places are really pulling in the same direction — that of mutual prosperity.
This is the last week of summer Tuesday Trivia as Monday is Labor Day, the final prong of the three prongs of summer. Today's prize is $20 to Portofino. Be the first to email the correct answer to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to win.
I've been using new music releases all summer as trivia fodder, but I'm going to throw a curve ball today.
Let’s face it, when you think of coffee shops, you think of basketball. Am I right? I’m right. I think it’s pretty obvious that the best way to definitively rank the caffeine citadels of Waco is to pair them with your 2014 NBA Finals Champions, the San Antonio Spurs. Go Spurs Go. Because like the Spurs, when you go to Starbucks, no matter where you are, you know what you’re getting. That consistency is key. That consistency wins fives championships. Before that though, some respect does need to be given to both Common Grounds and Dichotomy.
Let's say you're just back in town from summer break and you celebrated by having a hard-hitting Saturday night. Then you wake up Sunday morning and you're looking to ease into the day. Where you wanna eat?
How 'bout Sunday brunch at Muddle?
So that, in the picture there, is slow-braised short rib over pasta at DiamondBacks. It was delicious and it was free and this is not a humble brag. It's just a straight ahead brag.
Actually, to take the obnoxiousness one step farther over the line, the DiamondBacks foks — specifically owner Michael Kornman and media consultant Mark Brinkerhoff — invited us out to taste some of their new menu items and talk about the new/classic aesthetic of Waco's most prestigious steakhouse. Along with the short rib, we also scarfed down the following new items:
Here's my hot sports prediction of the week:
Sometime during the upcoming football season, football fans not too far from here will be hankering and hollering for a new coach. And just in time, there will be a new coach in town or, more specifically, there will be a new Coach's.
Tuesday Trivia is back. Sorry for the two-week absence.
This week's prize is a $20 gift card to Captain Billy Whizzbang's. The first person to email the correct answer to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. wins. Simple as that.
