Here's my hot sports prediction of the week:
Sometime during the upcoming football season, football fans not too far from here will be hankering and hollering for a new coach. And just in time, there will be a new coach in town or, more specifically, there will be a new Coach's.
Ok, everybody relax. That's just my fancy (cheesy?) way of saying it looks like we can expect a mid-football-season arrival of the new Coach's BBQ downtown. Coach's is going to move into the space formerly occupied by Sam's on the Square. The staff at Coach's told me last night that they're looking at November, but could be in a little earlier if all goes well.
I'm happy about this development as Coach's has my favorite potato salad in the county. Now, I know that comment is going to induce criticism from the BBQ fascists, but I don't care. There's more to liking a barbecue place than the brisket. I for one think that if you can make decent sausage and tasty sides, then you're all right be me. And that's not to give a thumbs up or thumbs down to Coach's brisket. I just find a lot to like about them either way. Last night, for example, I was surprised by how much I dug their "Sweet Heat" sauce.
The artist formerly known as Kim's
So the old staple on Waco Drive known as Kim's is in the process of going from an authentic and a little dilapidated diner, to a new retro-style diner. To that end, they're redoing the parking lot.
I don't know this for sure, but I'm guessing the re-paving of the parking lot has something to do with the fact that someone accidentally drove their car through the front of Kim's a while back.
Manny's is hiring, painting
A roll by the old Lake Brazos Steakhouse on Tuesday revealed that they have painted it up to look more like the Mexican food restaurant it will become. And they're hiring, or so the sign out front advertises.
It's going to be Manny's on the River. We're still poking around for details on how soon they will open up. The clock is seriously ticking on them getting open in time for the first football game, which I have to believe was an objective.
