I've been using new music releases all summer as trivia fodder, but I'm going to throw a curve ball today.
The Ice Bucket Challenge phenomenon has been amazing to watch both because of its illustration of the power of social media and more importantly how it has raised awareness and money for ALS research. It also has me thinking about Lou Gehrig. Known as the Iron Horse, Gehrig played with both Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio. Gehrig set the record for career grand slams with 23 and finished his career with 493 home runs while winning six World Series with the Yankees. He also set one of the most famous American sports records of the 20th century by playing in 2,130 consecutive games, a record everyone considered to be unbreakable until a guy named Cal Ripken Jr. came along.
But, and this shows how serious ALS is, Gehrig quickly deteriorated and died less than two years after his retirement. Now this is not to trivialize, but to put a face on the man who has long been the namesake of ALS. So here's the question:
When Gehrig died on June 2, 1941, what American sports phenomenon was in its early stages?
