Yes, I'm jumping from writing about obesity awareness and eating healthy on Monday to writing about donuts today. No, I do not find this to be hypocritical.
It's just the news of the day, sort of.
Dunkin' Donuts put out a press release on Thursday of last week announcing it wants to go into five new markets around the country, one of which is here in Waco.
There's a new development in the seemingly ever-changing category of Mexican food restaurants here in Waco.
We like this one, or at least we're optimistic about the possibilities.
El Charro Tapatio will soon be opening a second location as it has taken over the location formerly held by Burrito King.
We don't get to choose our given names.
From that point forward we put careful attention into naming things, whether it be pets or cars or websites.
What's the skinny on Cafe Cappuccino?
Word on the street recently has been that one of Waco's favorite breakfast spots is closing one location and opening another one. And of course, we at WacoFork want to be the source that helps suss out these questions. So I found out a little information for you this morning.
I began this week on this blog by sort of teasing all of you good WacoFork readers with a new restaurant coming to town, which turned out to be Quaker Steak & Lube.
So I'll lead todays notes with a little more news. Through a bit of reconnaissance today, I learned that the old First Federal building at the intersection of Valley Mills and Lake Air is soon to be a retail center featuring two new restaurants.
Think about this for a minute: whenever we say "Waco's getting a … " it means a new chain restaurant is coming to town and we're at least a little excited about it.
There are varying opinions on chain restaurants. The most discerning of the restaurant snobs will turn up their noses at any place where he or she can't speak with the owner and/or chef during each dining experience. But keep an ear on those restaurant snobs. Sometimes they can be heard saying "Waco's getting a …" Now, that statement is possibly followed by a snide remark and roll of the eyes. Still, though, they said it. They're aware of it, which means they must be at least a little interested.
That's a long way of saying Waco's getting a … Let the suspense rise up in you for a moment before I reveal that Waco … is … getting … a … Quaker Steak & Lube.
The bagel doesn't need my endorsement. I realize that. The bagel is doing just fine no matter what I think.
A few weeks ago, I wrote in this space that I didn't see why anyone, given the choice between a donut and a bagel would choose a bagel. That sentiment sparked a mini firestorm of controversy known in certain circles as bagelgate.
I took my first vacation last week since we launched WacoFork, so of course two new restaurants opened downtown.
Metro moved into the space formerly occupied by Austin's On The Avenue. Officially it became Metro last Thursday, but this isn't just a name change. Metro is sort of tapping a previously unavailable type of food. It's New York food, thus the name.
Some days I wonder what I will write in this space. Mondays especially.
In that regard, today began like any other day. I sipped some coffee at Starbucks and did a little morning reading and put off thinking about it. And then I drove to Chipotle and today's blog was sitting there waiting for me in a tray right at the beginning of the line.
Trumpets sounded. A nearly audible voice declared "Here, my son, is today's blog. Chipotle has added brown rice to its menu."
Having just added a new Mexican food listing to our restaurant directory today — The Ranchito — I've been thinking about the plethora of taquerias and taco trucks and other assorted Mexican food restaurants we are fortunate to have in Waco.
