One More Bite

The WacoFork Blog

It's funny how this WacoFork wire thing works.

Because I'm not a good or diligent enough reporter to come up with all of this stuff on my own. I rely on tweets and Facebook posts and restaurant managers and just plain and simple word of mouth to fuel this blog.

When I was a kid, my family spent a lot of time driving back and forth between Waco and Lubbock as that is where my parents grew up and where their parents still lived.

That meant many long car trips. On those trips, whenever we asked my dad how much longer until we got there, he would tell us this unfunny joke about how a cat got its tail run over and the doctor said "It won't be long now." After a while he would just say, "It's like that cat's tail."

Well, if you're wondering how long until BJ's Brewhouse opens for business, it's like that cat's tail.

Cafe Homestead continues to elevate its game for its monthly Farm To Table dinners.

I guess when people walk away from dinner saying "That's the best meal I've had in a long time," it comes with a certain amount of pressure to keep topping the last one.

Fat Ho is back

Fat Ho Burger is back in business.

It's reopened inside the RZS Food Mart at Waco Drive and Turner Street in East Waco.

I bet you think I'm dedicating a blog to the fact that there is now a fenced off perimeter in the shopping center at Franklin Avenue and New Road, the location where there will soon be a Freebirds World Burrito.

I did see that on my way home from watching the NCAA Tournament championship game last night. But I've got much juicier Freebirds info to drop on you today.

Insert Freebirds here

Construction of the new Freebirds restaurant in Waco could begin as early as this week.

Craving more information on the arrival of Freebirds, I spoke with some managers of stores in the shopping center at New Road and Franklin Avenue on Tuesday afternoon and learned groundbreaking could be happening very soon.

We're happy to be teaming with Baylor Student Government on their initiative called Passport To Waco, which kicked off last week.

If you're a Baylor student, you should get your hands on one of these things. It's kind of like an extended scavenger hunt that's kind of easy and there's a guaranteed prize.

I have reason to be very confident that there will be a Smashburger in Waco by this time in 2013.

I also have more reason to be excited about this having dined there on Wednesday.

To be completely frank, I've known about the new Smashburger in Temple for a while as Brad Brown, whom I met during our WacoFork adventure, is managing that new restaurant in Temple. However, it didn't command my attention as I kind of thought, "Ok, another burger place. Cool." But my friend Tate Barrett approached me after church on Sunday and enthusiastically asked about Smashburger. That prompted me to try it.

[ UPDATE (12:52 p.m., Thursday): About noon today, Freebirds posted the same information on its own Facebook wall that it posted on the Bring Freebirds to Waco wall on Wednesday evening. That's just another layer of official-ness. ]

Apparently, Freebirds chose to announce its new restaurant in Waco by commenting it on the Facebook page of a group called "Bring Freebirds to Waco."

The post claimed "It's official, Waco — we love you and are coming for you fall of 2012! N. New Road just north of Franklin Ave in the Academy parking lot. It will be a beautiful, very rare freestanding unit … just for Waco!"

As mentioned earlier this week, we are just about to enter my favorite time of the year — the three weeks of agony, ecstasy and glory called March Madness, which is a nickname for the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament.

Last year my roommate and I traveled to Las Vegas to bet on games and watch them in the MGM Grand sports book. It was fun even though I felt like the only guy in the massive crowd who didn't own the entire series of "Entourage" on DVD.
