I have reason to be very confident that there will be a Smashburger in Waco by this time in 2013.
I also have more reason to be excited about this having dined there on Wednesday.
To be completely frank, I've known about the new Smashburger in Temple for a while as Brad Brown, whom I met during our WacoFork adventure, is managing that new restaurant in Temple. However, it didn't command my attention as I kind of thought, "Ok, another burger place. Cool." But my friend Tate Barrett approached me after church on Sunday and enthusiastically asked about Smashburger. That prompted me to try it.
I have to say I was impressed both by the burger and the sweet potato fries, which were tossed with rosemary, olive oil and garlic. The burger was served on something Smashburger calls an egg bun, which set it apart as well.
Just based on the basic cheeseburger and sweet potato fries, my eyes were opened a little bit. Factor in the fact that Smashburger's menu gives customers a huge variety — the jalapeño bbq burger, the spicy baja burger and add-ons like applewood smoked bacon, a fried egg, avocado, fried pickles and haystack onion rings — and I'm looking forward to making my way around more of the Smashburger universe.
Obviously, the big Freebirds news this week grabbed the attention of many Waco restaurant enthusiasts. I'm going to tell you this Smashburger deal could be every bit as pleasing to the taste buds even if it doesn't make the same kind of splash.
Now the particulars.
Brown said he's pretty sure there will be a Smashburger in Waco by this time next year. Smashburger has been looking around Waco for the right spot and might have found it. The company is working on a deal that could bring Smashburger to Waco by mid-fall.
