There's a new development in the seemingly ever-changing category of Mexican food restaurants here in Waco.
We like this one, or at least we're optimistic about the possibilities.
El Charro Tapatio will soon be opening a second location as it has taken over the location formerly held by Burrito King.
For those of us who have grown accustomed to Sunday lunch on the patio at the original El Charro at Waco Drive and 17th Street, there's no reason to fret. I've been told it's staying open. We will just have another option.
The staff working hard to get the new location at 1709 S. Valley Mills Drive ready for business told me it could be open as soon as Monday. When they begin serving their brand of enchiladas and such, we'll let you know.
Cafe Homestead's dinners will be back soon
During the month of August, Cafe Homestead presented a couple of worldview-altering "Farm to Table" dinners, including a Mediterranean dinner on August 25.
Seriously, they upped my expectations for how good restaurant food could be.
Today would have been the next in the succession of dinners had Cafe Homestead stayed with the every-other-Thursday formula. However, they're taking a brief break, possibly to consider their strategy for the dinner offerings.
Last I spoke with manager Derek Varejcka, he was asking me what nights I believed would attract the best crowds. I told him I thought Thursday nights were the ideal night.
Alas, we won't be missing these special treats for long.
Earlier this afternoon, the staff at Cafe Homestead told me the next dinner is soon to be announced, perhaps even by the end of this week.
Shout at the devil
A couple of weeks ago, my friends Toph Whisnant and Cameron Weed were daring each other to take on a specific spicy food challenge.
The idea was to eat Metro's Hell's Kitchen Wings and Taqueria Mexican Taco's El Diablo on the same evening. Since I happened to be sitting nearby, I said "WacoFork will pay for one order of wings and two tacos."
So that's what we are up to tonight and we invite you, good WacoFork friend, to come and spectate. We're calling it "Waco Fork's Deal With The Devil," and it will commence at 7:30 p.m. at Metro.
If you have other plans tonight, that's OK. A blog, which I can only assume will be hilarious, will follow on Friday.
