A friend of mine told me on Sunday that March is her favorite month. Her reasons had something to do with her birthday and her boyfriend's birthday and St. Patrick's Day, blah, blah, blah.
March is my favorite month as well. And while I recognize that my mother's birthday is in March, as well as my parents' anniversary, and I am casually amused by people flocking to bars to drink green beer, I know deep down in my soul there's one dominating factor which drives my love for March — the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
I just wanted to brag real quick about beginning the weekend a night early by attending the One Thirty Five Prime bourbon dinner featuring Dan Garrison of Garrison Brothers Distillery.
My old friend Dr. Shawn Skeen and I signed up after we were given a friendly heads up by One Thirty Five Prime bartender extraordinaire Sarah Blocker. The menu was enough to sell us as it included pheasant, pork belly and venison.
Sometimes I hear about restaurants opening way before they even start hiring employees. And sometimes they sneak up on me.
Over the weekend, I bumped into my buddy Rob Bradfield, who told me about a seafood market and restaurant on Old Dallas Highway, which I hadn't heard about before he mentioned it. Curious, I went on the hunt Wednesday afternoon and sure enough found Friday's Seafood And More. When I asked Sharon, the lady at the counter, how long they had been open, she said "Good Friday of last year."
The pundits are calling this the most competitive bracket.
Let's put it this way: two of these four giants — Poppa Rollo's, Bangkok Royal, Captain Billy Whizzbang's, Dubl-R — won't make it out of the first round.
We didn't establish a No. 1 overall seed (as far as you know), but George's is certainly the powerhouse of this tournament.
The Cameron Park Zoo Region includes a couple of enticing first-round matchups, one because of its contrast of styles and the other because of similarities.
The WacoFork Bracket Challenge bracket is set. Talks with ESPN to have it unveiled in a LeBron-James-style primetime special fell through, so we're releasing them right here for your Monday reading pleasure.
We're simultaneously releasing all four brackets in individual blog posts. Check out the matchups and be prepared to start voting March 4. If you have a vested interested in one of the restaurants, now is the time to start mobilizing support.
The weekend is upon us. And there's no Valentine's silliness or holidays of any kind, that I'm aware of, March Madness doesn't fire up for another month and we're a long way from graduation and summer fun.
Nope, it's just an ordinary weekend. But the weather forecast looks fantastic, so it's a good weekend to relax and enjoy life with the family and/or your buds. Just in case you need it, here are some things to talk about while you're chilling like villains.
There will likely be two new restaurants opening up by the middle of summer across the street from Vitek's at the new 16th & Speight shopping center.
I've heard rumblings of what they might be, but nothing is confirmed yet.
