Weekend conversation starters

The weekend is upon us. And there's no Valentine's silliness or holidays of any kind, that I'm aware of, March Madness doesn't fire up for another month and we're a long way from graduation and summer fun.

Nope, it's just an ordinary weekend. But the weather forecast looks fantastic, so it's a good weekend to relax and enjoy life with the family and/or your buds. Just in case you need it, here are some things to talk about while you're chilling like villains.

1. Torchy's is so close we can taste it.

The Austin-based taco chain Tweeted at us today to keep our eyes peeled for a taco party. Oh, don't worry Torchy's, our eyes have been peeled in case you haven't already noticed.

To that end, I did another slow drive by the future Torchy's just now (about 2 on Friday afternoon). It's obvious all the heavy lifting is finished. The renovated former Taco Bueno looks fantastic. This is going to be a party joint, y'all. I can't wait.

I'm shamelessly begging them for an opening date and as soon as I know, I'll pass it along as quickly as I can type, which my grandad thinks is pretty fast.

2. One Thirty Five Prime is hosting a bourbon dinner featuring Dan Garrison of Garrison Brothers Distillery on Thursday night.

I signed up for this last night, so I'm pretty sure there are spots available. This is going to be a four-course deal with each course going heavy on bourbon-influenced dishes including half of pheasant, pork belly, loin of venison and bread pudding.

It's $95 per person. To make reservations or for more information call 254-666-3100.

3. I noticed while running errands today that the former Peter Piper Pizza location at Waco Drive and Valley Mills has signage in place for the coming Asian-food buffet.

I learned of this development in Waco Tribune-Herald columnist Mike Copeland's Sunday installment (that's called attribution) in which he also offered that the place will likely be called Vegas Buffet.

Bonus conversational question: Do we give a Schlitz about this?
