I was driving to China Spring on Saturday to cover a high school softball playoff game for the Trib when I noticed a bright red truck and a barbecue pit just off to the left of China Spring Highway (aka, N. 19th Street).

I love when this happens, because I know I have something to check on for the next week. However, I hate it when I ask the proprietor how long they've been there and it turns out I probably should have noticed it long ago. In this case, Bonesuckerz has been serving barbecue in this spot since July.

Let's get a little bit Rowdy

We've been wondering what was taking Rusty Taco so long to open and now we know. There's not going to be a Rusty Taco.

Instead, we will very soon be able to dine at Rowdy Taco. Same location, but different concept and branding. I spoke with general manager Cody Brown today and he gave me to new scoop.

There's a new item on my weekly docket as of this morning. I'm hitting Captain Billy Whizzbang's for lunch on Wednesday. Who's with me?

Whizzbang's is holding an all-day benefit for Blake Hyland, an area high school student who is recovering from a brain injury he suffered while practicing gymnastics. It's easy to help. Just dine at Whizzbang's between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday and tell them your are supporting "Prayers for Blake."

Freddy's bursts onto Hewitt scene

Freddy's is open.

The newest burger chain to come to town cranked up its engine and began serving customers in the Hewitt Drive location on Monday morning. True to form, we dined there immediately.

Rusty Taco opening very soon

We have more specific information on the opening of Rusty Taco on Valley Mills Drive in the Aldi shopping center.

I just realized it's about dang time for another Taco Week, btw. Look for that in early June.

Hey, graduates, where you wanna eat?

Hope everyone has their graduation weekend plans in place, but in case you don't, here's a quick heads up.

I just checked on the availability of seats for dinner at Cafe Homestead on Friday and Saturday night. Cafe manager Derek Varejcka told me the 6 p.m. seatings are full both nights but there are tables available at 7:30 both nights.

What's next?

Friends, in the past two years, our town has welcomed some pretty fantastic newcomers to town.

To hit the highlights, Torchy's, Freebirds and BJ's Brewhouse have arrived and we have pretty solid information that In-N-Out will be coming in the near future. All of that development has happened alongside locals who are innovating and putting their money where their mouths are in terms of betting on Waco.

Monday recon: Club Sandwich rolls out

We hit up the Club Sandwich opening party on Saturday night at Dichotomy.

Club Sandwich is the continuation of a concept proprietor Youngdae Moon had in a downtown community center a couple of years ago. When the community center changed direction in terms of offering a restaurant, Moon regrouped and began planning to relaunch in food-truck form.

This is a quick-hit, weekend-starter post.

This is just me telling you one thing I have on my to-do list for the weekend. If you like, you can fill in with your plans in the comment section so that this can be a more well-rounded bulletin for all that's shaking in Waco today, Saturday and Sunday.

This is a heads up for Baylor graduates planning graduation weekend and also for anyone who has trouble fitting trips to Cafe Homestead into their busy weekly schedules. Cafe Homestead is going to open for dinner on Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17.

There will be seatings at 6 and 7:30 both evenings. Go here to make reservations.
