254Eats Bracket Challenge begins Tuesday; prepare to vote

A friend of mine told me on Sunday that March is her favorite month. Her reasons had something to do with her birthday and her boyfriend's birthday and St. Patrick's Day, blah, blah, blah.

March is my favorite month as well. And while I recognize that my mother's birthday is in March, as well as my parents' anniversary, and I am casually amused by people flocking to bars to drink green beer, I know deep down in my soul there's one dominating factor which drives my love for March — the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

Yes, that glorious beast known as March Madness. The fact that the calendar turned to March 1 over the weekend was enough to make me almost too giddy to sleep. Is that why WacoFork is jumping on the bracket bandwagon and rolling out the 254Eats Bracket Challenge? Yeah, that's a likely motive. Less cynically, though, we just think it will be fun.

After all, that's what this is for = fun. We hope none of the restaurant proprietors or restaurant fans get their feelings hurt by the voting. We sincerely do not want that. We've already had a blast taking nominations for this thing and we're certain the restaurants involved represent our town well.

That's not to say the bracket is perfect. Anyone who loves March Madness even a quarter as much as me, knows there are bubble teams every year left out of the NCAA Tournament's 64-team field. We've limited our bracket to 32 restaurants, so certainly some fantastic joints didn't make the field. Perhaps next year we'll expand to 64 teams. We'll have to wait and see.

For now, be advised VOTING BEGINS AT 9 AM ON TUESDAY. Return to the One More Bite Blog, click on each region and vote. We'll narrow the thing down from 32 to 16 restaurants by the end of the week, so don't miss your chance to contribute.

One More Bite: KCEN helped us spread the word with this piece. Perhaps we should have done a selection show. Maybe next year.
