How 'bout ... Cafe Homestead

January 30, 2013 | Chad Conine | Profiles | Comment

[ "How 'bout …" is the logical extension of our tagline "Where you wanna eat?" Because we've all been there when someone says "Where you wanna eat?" and then everyone stands around a little awkwardly until someone cautiously offers up "How 'bout …" and then the name of a restaurant. It's also a way for us to highlight the restaurants that we want to highlight. Here it goes. ]

Cafe Homestead partners with local and organic sources to provide guests with the highest quality dining experience. The cafe is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. for breakfast on Saturday and remaining open until 6 p.m. Also, be on the lookout for their special dinners, one of the best culinary treats in town.

The question on quite a few Waco-restaurant-lovers minds these days hovers around the possibility of Indian food.

Recently, an Indian food stand popped up at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market, though I spoke with the person that runs it and he said he's sticking with farmers markets for the time being. And I've been asked by development-minded folks if I thought Indian food would work in a specific location in town.

I'm currently sitting at the bar at Dichotomy at Croft, as I'm wont to do a couple of times a week. In case anyone is interested, I tend to alternate between here, Common Grounds and Starbucks during the working portion of my day. Who needs an office, right?

Dichotomy, which is in the planning stages of a coffee and spirits bar downtown across the street from Bank of America on Austin Ave., has been operating out of The Croft since November. Until about a week ago they were open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Remember Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem? They were the band on The Muppets. Remember their bus?

Well that's the vehicle that popped to mind when I caught up with the La Lola Loca food truck on the Baylor campus today. I believe the picture with this blog explains why I thought of The Muppets band. But I should probably offer a little more info on the new Baylor food truck.

We told you a couple of weeks ago about the plans for a new restaurant at 1401 Speight, plans that were made a bit more intriguing by the fact that the restaurateurs were outsourcing their menu.

For a couple of months, the website 1401speight.com gave viewers a chance to suggest the type of food the restaurant would serve. Then they narrowed the choices to street tacos, gourmet franks and sausages and a burger bar. Then they began taking votes.

Last call for Restaurant Week

I really hope you haven't put off doing Restaurant Week until today. I hope you've enjoyed at least one menu item already and helped out Big Brothers Big Sisters in the process.

But in case you have put it off, know that it's not too late. You still have Friday evening and you just might be out at one of the participating restaurants anyway, so if that's the case then order the Restaurant Week choice. Then on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there's the Restaurant Week Festival at Knox Hall in the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. Tickets for the catered lunchtime party are $10 and kids get in free.

It's cool to see the different ways restaurants are particiapting in Restaurant Week this week. Some places have specific menu items, like Vitek's Sweet Potato Spud Pak, while others are offering customers a deal along with the designated portion of the check that goes to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In Schmaltz's case, almost the entire sandwich menu is in play. Schmaltz's is offering any sandwich on jalapeño cheese bread. They're making a special batch of the bread all week just for the event. That's awesome.

El Crucero expanding hours, menu

Obviously, we're big fans of Taqueria El Crucero, as is a pretty significant segment of WacoFork regulars, so we're excited about a couple of new developments at Crucero.

Beginning tomorrow, Crucero will be open Friday and Saturday evenings. They'll open up at the usual time of 7 a.m., but they'll stay open until 8 p.m. That's 12 more hours per week when you have the opportunity to dine at one of Waco's best local Mexican food joints.

I hope you're enjoying Restaurant Week as much as I am. There are some great menu choices out there and it's a perfect chance to have fun and help out a great organization as $2 from every check goes to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

On Tuesday evening, I dined with event organizer Summer Shine and some other nice folks at Poppa Rollo's. The pizza joint is going to give you $2 off a large pizza AND give $2 from the check to Restaurant Week. They're all in and you should be too.

Whoa, I had to think about that headline for too long. It just occurred to me that pepper jack cheesesteak could be anywhere from two to four words. As far as I can tell, the correct answer to this quandry is three words.

Anyway, no matter how you want to break it up, think about taking down a WiseGuys pepper jack cheesesteak, one of the many menu items being offerd up by local eateries for Restaurant Week this week.
