I'm currently sitting at the bar at Dichotomy at Croft, as I'm wont to do a couple of times a week. In case anyone is interested, I tend to alternate between here, Common Grounds and Starbucks during the working portion of my day. Who needs an office, right?
Dichotomy, which is in the planning stages of a coffee and spirits bar downtown across the street from Bank of America on Austin Ave., has been operating out of The Croft since November. Until about a week ago they were open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
But as of last week, Dichotomy has extended its hours until 8 p.m. and even later on event nights. So it's an ideal place for a late-afternoon meeting or an after-work chat. And for freelancers out there, it's now an even better place to hunker down and get some work done.
Speaking of events, Dichotomy will be hosting its monthly barista throwdown on Thursday night. For interested baristas, sign ups will start about 7 and then the latte-art tournament will commence a little before 8.
Active week on Common Grounds stage
And while I'm on the subject of events at local coffee shops, Common Grounds' Movie Tuesday cranks up for the semester tonight with "Groundhog Day" beginning at 7 p.m.
Tomorrow night its another installment of featured-artist open mic with featured artist Savion Wright. That event will begin about 8:30 and last until about 11.
Not stopping there, Common Grounds then hosts another show, Quiet Company and Tapajenga, on Thursday night, "doors opening" at 7.
Too many padlocks
In my recon the last couple of weeks, I've noticed three local establishments with the lights off during normal operating hours.
The Grillin' Station, My Brewed Awakening and Los Amigos de San Juan have gone dark with the doors locked. I don't want to pronounce them gone until I know for sure, but it's not a good sign.
