The question on quite a few Waco-restaurant-lovers minds these days hovers around the possibility of Indian food.
Recently, an Indian food stand popped up at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market, though I spoke with the person that runs it and he said he's sticking with farmers markets for the time being. And I've been asked by development-minded folks if I thought Indian food would work in a specific location in town.
Meanwhile, Al Miraj opened on Franklin Avenue. It's officially a Mediterranean Grill and hookah bar. But I spoke with another restaurant owner who insisted to me that it is Indian food.
There's very little rationale to that argument, although a segment of the Al Miraj menu is "Indo-Pak Traditions." But there's no curry on the menu, which to me is the key indication that it's not Indian food.
Al Miraj, which is open at lunch as well as dinner now, does serve plenty of gyro, falafel and kabab options. One critique of the menu I've heard is that it's too all-over-the-place.
So Al Miraj is going to stay in the Mediterranean category on our site. And by the way, I've dined there once and will say that I liked the hummus.
One more bite: In case anyone is wondering, a hookah is a single- or multi-stemmed instrument for smoking flavored tobacco called shisha in which smoke is passed through a water basin before inhalation.
