El Crucero expanding hours, menu

Obviously, we're big fans of Taqueria El Crucero, as is a pretty significant segment of WacoFork regulars, so we're excited about a couple of new developments at Crucero.

Beginning tomorrow, Crucero will be open Friday and Saturday evenings. They'll open up at the usual time of 7 a.m., but they'll stay open until 8 p.m. That's 12 more hours per week when you have the opportunity to dine at one of Waco's best local Mexican food joints.

That's not all, though, Crucero has expanded its menu too. So far, the new menu item attracting the most attention are the Huevos Mayas — three quail eggs, your choice of fried or scrambled, two tortillas fried in apple seed oil, topped with black beans and ranchero sauce; choice of one breakfast meat and garnished with plantains.

And if you're going for dinner on Friday or Saturday, do yourself a favor and get chorizo con queso, another newbie, as an appetizer.

There are about five new menu items and a new vegetarian section of the menu. That means all diets are catered to at Crucero. The vegetarian menu even includes a vegan plate — eggplant, zucchini, bell pepper and onions sauteed with olive oil and served with rice and beans.
