A friend of mine told me on Sunday that March is her favorite month. Her reasons had something to do with her birthday and her boyfriend's birthday and St. Patrick's Day, blah, blah, blah.

March is my favorite month as well. And while I recognize that my mother's birthday is in March, as well as my parents' anniversary, and I am casually amused by people flocking to bars to drink green beer, I know deep down in my soul there's one dominating factor which drives my love for March — the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.

I just wanted to brag real quick about beginning the weekend a night early by attending the One Thirty Five Prime bourbon dinner featuring Dan Garrison of Garrison Brothers Distillery.

My old friend Dr. Shawn Skeen and I signed up after we were given a friendly heads up by One Thirty Five Prime bartender extraordinaire Sarah Blocker. The menu was enough to sell us as it included pheasant, pork belly and venison.

Sometimes I hear about restaurants opening way before they even start hiring employees. And sometimes they sneak up on me.

Over the weekend, I bumped into my buddy Rob Bradfield, who told me about a seafood market and restaurant on Old Dallas Highway, which I hadn't heard about before he mentioned it. Curious, I went on the hunt Wednesday afternoon and sure enough found Friday's Seafood And More. When I asked Sharon, the lady at the counter, how long they had been open, she said "Good Friday of last year."

Everybody has a favorite place to eat, even fictional characters from our favorite TV shows.

How's this for meta? The people who make TV shows write about restaurants because those are some of the closest places to their hearts and then we, in turn, identify with those restaurants because they remind us of the places we hang out and have fun BUT THEN WE ALSO identify some of the places around us as our version of places we see on TV.

No other region pits old vs. new like the Suspension Bridge Region.

Jasper's, Kitok's, El Conquistador, Leal's and Baris rep the old guard while Shorty's and WiseGuys lead the new blood charge.

The pundits are calling this the most competitive bracket.

Let's put it this way: two of these four giants — Poppa Rollo's, Bangkok Royal, Captain Billy Whizzbang's, Dubl-R — won't make it out of the first round.

ALICO Region

Last March, Vitek's won the Food Channel's College Eats Bracket Challenge. Does that make them a favorite to win our bracket? They'll have to get past Cafe Capp first.

Actually, there are at least three restaurants in this region that could win the whole shebang.
