One More Bite

Cafe Homestead opened up two more seatings for its February special dinner, both of them on Valentine's night. The additional seatings will be at 6 and 8 Friday night.

If you were trying to manage your Valentine's scene, this is pretty good idea.

Jake's unleashes breakfast menu

Jake’s Texas Tea House is opening for breakfast starting Tuesday and, courtesy of Jake himself, we're the first to have access to the breakfast menu.

Jake’s will be serving breakfast from 7:30-10:30 Tuesday through Friday mornings and 8-11 on Saturday mornings. This is a significant schedule shift as Jake's is now only open for dinner on Friday nights.

The moment is overwhelming. It's a good thing they give us chips and salsa to get us through.

At casual lunch with friends at places like El Crucero, El Charro or Mi Tequila, or on a night out at Ninfa's or La Fiesta, the panic rushes in as soon as the colorful menu demands a decision.

Today, I learned, from TSTC student Philip Doriocourt, important information regarding the menu themes and dates of all of the TSTC formal dining events being held at TSTC this semester. The list below can be your “go to” reference for the rest of the semester.

Call the culinary arts department at (254) 867-4868 to secure your spot for lunch. Reservations, though not always necessary, are a good idea. It is recommended that guests arrive between 11-11:30 before lunch starts. Lunch is typically an hour long and is a full-service dining experience.

Our town received a couple of impressive stamps of approval last week as Dichotomy and Balcones landed prestigious recognition.

It's been well publicized that Dichotomy made Eater.com's list of "The 20 Hottest Coffee Shops Across the US Right Now," and that Balcones' Texas Single Malt earned London's Wizards of Whisky World Whisky of the Year.

The Torchy's sign in the picture with this blog is from our Waco location.

I wish I had a whole bunch of concrete information today, but I don't. I know a sign is up and I snooped around while construction was going on, learning that the inside is making significant progress toward being outfitted for the restaurant.

Try not to make a scene

Bad news, friends. Katy Perry's upcoming Prismatic World Tour doesn't include a Waco date, taking a cue from Pearl Jam, who skipped us last fall. Lorde doesn't have any plans to come here. Imagine Dragons is brazenly flying over our town when they swing through Texas in February.

I guess that's why they say we don't have a live music scene here. Nonetheless, there are opportunities to be serenaded here in our humble burg. Actually, there are a bunch of them this weekend beginning tonight.

Last week I posted an article with the top 10 rules for dining out with children, and I got a lot of interesting responses. I wrote that article from the perspective of a parent who dines out with three children often and tries his best to follow those 10 rules. However, I know there is a flip side to the discussion, because as a parent I know that there are times when it's simply not possible to follow those rules perfectly. With that in mind, I decided to write 10 rules for dining without children, for all those people who look down their noses at parents who are struggling to get their kids to behave.

Today's news of Treff's closing has created mass mourning, at least on our social media outlets, because of the loss of the piano man.

Fret not.

Closing time

The revamping of Austin Avenue keeps getting more interesting, perhaps even volatile.

The latest news came Monday afternoon when Johnson-Dillard Inc's Robert Johnson told me Treff's has closed. After 13 years as Treff's in that location (previously it was Six-Shooter Junction) the proliferation of bars in that area of Austin Ave., combined with Treff's management's need to focus its efforts on its San Marcos tavern, have resulted in another closing on one of Waco's key downtown streets.
