Downtown: things'll be great

On the surface, this picture is pretty mundane. Is it worth a thousand words? Actually, yeah, but I'm not going to spend that many on it. Maybe 450.

First, the main action of the photo is the gentleman spraying the brick. That's significant for a couple of reasons. The brick in question is the newly placed brick on the exterior of the coming Dichotomy coffee bar on Austin Avenue. Specifically, it's in the 500 block. We're looking forward to this place opening, which looks like it might happen sometime in September.

Cafe Homestead grilling August dinner

I haven't been to a Cafe Homestead special dinner in a while, but this one looks too good to pass up.

On August 17, Cafe Homestead will roll out a garlic-crusted prime rib dinner augmented by some eye-catching sides. There will be two settings — 5:30 and 7:30 — and it will cost $48 per person.

WF Tuesday Trivia ($25 to Kitok's)

Here's the 14th installment of Tuesday Trivia, which we'll be running all summer.

We've been tying trivia to new music releases since that happens on Tuesdays, so you would have some framework for my question's origin.

LTC working on earning stripes

Well, I'm more conflicted than anyone should be concerning the opening of a convenience store.

Stripes, which contains the fast-food taco cafe Laredo Taco Company, opened at the intersection of New Road and Bagby today. My grand plan was to hit it up after my morning warm-up at Starbucks and buy enough tacos to take home for me and my friend Giles, who usually mows my yard on Monday.

The better end of the deal

The Major League Baseball trade deadline came and went on Wednesday without any life-altering news in my world of sports. But I still sort of sympathized with baseball teams who either lost or gained players.

(In case you're thinking that maybe I'm accidentally posting this on the wrong blog because it fits better on my sports essay venue, just hang with me for a minute and it will make sense.)

Tuesday Trivia ($25 at Sironia)

Here's the 13th installment of Tuesday Trivia, which we'll be running all summer.

We've been tying trivia to new music releases since that happens on Tuesdays, so you would have some framework for my question's origin. Today's question coincides with Vince Gill releasing a new album called "Bakersfield."

Monday recon: 3 newbies

I have three items to report from my weekend rounds with three different levels of information.

First, my buddy Toph Whisnant told me he dined at the new Mexican food restaurant, Cancun, which is located on Waco Drive in the building formerly occupied by Adriana and Janette's. Cancun opened in the last week or so. Whisnant said the decor in the restaurant is impressive but the menu might still be finding its way.

News and notes: Nizza open

Nizza Pizza quietly opened on Bagby on Thursday.

In a sense, it's something we didn't already have — a walk-up, New York-style pizza place. It's kind of like sbarro, Michael Scott's favorite pizza joint in New York. I've already consumed the two pieces in the picture with this blog. I was going to eat one on location and save the other for later. Which I did, sort of, as I saved it for about 20 minutes later. Restraint.

Clay Pot clearing cellar

Here's an idea for the weekend: dine at Clay Pot and take advantage of their fantastic wine sale.

In order to make room for an udpated wine list, Clay Pot is selling bottles of wine at half price.
