News and notes: Nizza open

Nizza Pizza quietly opened on Bagby on Thursday.

In a sense, it's something we didn't already have — a walk-up, New York-style pizza place. It's kind of like sbarro, Michael Scott's favorite pizza joint in New York. I've already consumed the two pieces in the picture with this blog. I was going to eat one on location and save the other for later. Which I did, sort of, as I saved it for about 20 minutes later. Restraint.

Let me back up a bit and describe the first thing I noticed when I walked in the door. I didn't expect to see a dessert display first thing. The cheese cakes and cannoli caught my eye, but I didn't give into the temptation. Notice in Monday's blog that I've eschewed desserts for the time being. Anyway, later.

A moment ago I mentioned that in a sense Nizza is something we didn't already have in town. In another sense, it's pretty hard to differentiate between Nizza and Shorty's Pizza Shack just a stone's throw away (not to mention Food For Thought, which makes good pizza).

I suppose Shorty's and Food For Thought are more places to meet and hang out, while it's more comfortable to go into Nizza solo. At first, that feels like a pretty slim distinction. But Nizza is obviously trying to capture a Baylor audience. Who among us didn't have those days in college when you needed to grab a bite to eat without bumping in to five people so you could just get some work done?

Unconfirmed opening dates

I received an email from a good WacoFork friend telling me the Stripes at New Road and Bagby will open on August 5 and the new HEB World (this is my nickname offering for the Valley Mills-Interstate 35 HEB) will open August 23. I'll work on firming up this info. However, on my morning commute, I noticed cars parked at the Stripes. This must have been for some sort of training.

I'm intrigued by Stripes and Laredo Taco Company. They don't even have to be the best tacos ever. They just have to be good enough to be pleasing, cheap sustenance two or three nights a week. (muttered under breath: oh, gosh, that sounds pretty pathetic.)
