We are just days away from the 2015 WacoFork #254Eats Bracket Challenge, and we need your help to fill the last 19 spots. We had so many great nominations this year that we are adding an extra round and going for a 64-restaurant bracket. There are 45 restaurants that are in, but we have a tie between 30 restaurants for the remaining 19 spots.
Something happened at lunch today that I wanted to pass along just because it was an example of people that work at a restaurant going above and beyond, or at least a job well done.
Cory, Carly, Miles and I went to Double Dave's. I got there first and ordered a buffet and a drink. The gentleman at the register asked if there was any kind of pizza I would like them to make. That's probably something they ask customers on a regular basis when they have time in the kitchen to do so. I wanted to just move along and say "Nah, I'm sure I'll find something I like."
So far we've received 77 restaurant nominations, including 34 restaurants with multiple nominations for the 254Eats Bracket Challenge.
This weekend we will tally em up and get the bracket ready, possibly asking for your help to determine the last few spots.
I noticed new signage while I was out and about at True Love on Friday evening. Sascee's has taken over the space formerly occupied by Al Miraj and Old Fashion BBQ.
So on Tuesday, I stopped by Sascee's to find out more. Turns out they're closed on Monday and Tuesday but owner Marcia Neal greeted me at the door and gave us the spill on the new restaurant.
I'm a web developer, and I work from home. Working from home is great, but every now and then it's good to be around other professionals who do what I do, or at least something similar. About a year ago, my friend Derick and I formed a coworking group. We meet (almost) every Wednesday downtown at Dichotomy to enjoy a mocha and mooch their free WiFi and get work done in the presence of other professionals.
It was this Wednesday that I noticed via the Hippodrome's Instagram account that they were offering a lunch special: chicken fried steak, buttermilk whipped potatoes, sautéed green beens, cornbread, and a drink for $8.99. I ate at a food truck recently and ended up spending about $12, so $8.99 seemed like a great deal for all that they were offering.
This is the second call for 254Eats Bracket Challenge nominations.
We need your help, WacoFork friends. The bracket challenge will go live with the first round on March 3, but first we need to hear from you regarding which local joints have to be included. Actually, we're not even particularly picky about local. Throw your favorite places out there and we'll sort them. Nominate by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or commenting on this blog or on Facebook or Tweet at us. Really, anyway you can think of to tell us whom we need to include can be counted.
Maybe one of these days Pappas Restaurants will announce plans to put a Pappadeaux and Pappasito's complex somewhere in our town. Ideally, we'll hear the news first and a post a blog that will get 10,000 likes on Facebook and as many retweets.
That would be fantastic. But maybe not for the obvious reasons.
We'd like to say a public thank you to Mama Fu's for having Cory and me over for lunch on Monday.
They wanted to showcase their menu and we definitely tried a decent variety. Sort of. I dine at Mama Fu's semi-frequently because I'm a bit of a fried-rice junkie, so I had fried rice. But I also ordered calamari. I actually don't remember what Cory ordered as I was hungry and basically scarfed my fried rice.
The much-anticipated Waco location opened February 2 and enjoyed large crowds over the weekend.
I went by to shop and sign up for World Market Explorer, a free membership that gives me, among other things, 10 percent off my first purchase (smoked salmon, artichoke & tomato bruschetta, various curry sauces); $10 credit for every $200 I spend; a birthday surprise (fingers crossed for chocolate); every seventh bag of coffee free; and special discounts on wine and beer.
Who's ready for this year's installment of the 254Eats Bracket Challenge?
We had a ton of fun putting on this deal for the first time last year, so we're definitely excited about doing it again. We're not sure if we're going to take 32 or 64 restaurants for this year's challenge and we need your help deciding.
