One More Bite

Tomorrow is the Grand Opening of Homestead Market which will be open Monday-Saturday from 10am to 6pm. It might not be a Whole Foods, but it promises to be a fun alternative!

Homestead Market will carry locally grown/sourced milk, eggs, flour, grass-fed beef, ice cream, poultry products, tea, baked goods, and produce. Also available are organic and all-natural brands such as Organic Valley, Fresh Point, Shelton's, Lundberg, Cascadian Farms, Alden's, Bob's Red Mill, and Wheat Montana.

We've been given the heads up that Fuego Tortilla Grill is scheduled to open its Woodway location right at the start of 2015.

Fuego, which will eventually have locations in Woodway across Highway 84 from H-E-B AND near Baylor on the east side of Interstate-35, features street tacos and all that implies.

Yes, the ice rink is synthetic, but the 2nd Annual Waco Wonderland promised to be a real good time. Go here for full schedule of events. Waco Wonderland is located in downtown at Heritage Square and along Austin Avenue from City Hall to 8th Street. The festival is free, but skating tickets are $5 and ferris wheel rides are $3.

CHRISMAS TREE LIGHTING & FIREWORDS TONIGHT: Stop by at 6pm before the Baylor game. Santa will also be around for the kiddies to visit.

So the bad news is that Coach’s downtown won’t arrive until early 2015. But the good news is they’re making the downtown space at 3rd and Austin Avenue their own. This downtown location has been a few different things in recent years with varying levels of success, so it's good that Coach's won't be just another thing rolling in.

I stopped by today and spoke with co-owner Gary Zacharias as he was hard at work on the remodeling of the outside. Coach's has constructed an adjoining house for its barbecue pit along with other cosmetic changes to the building.

I'm not sure the anticipation of Manny's on the River has quite kept pace with just how cool this new restaurant might be.

I stopped by Manny's on Tuesday morning to check on its possible opening date and spoke with Manny's rep Mike Anderson. He said the restaurant is hosting a private event on Sunday evening and then swinging open the doors to the public on Monday.

Veggie Van: local produce goes mobile

World Hunger Relief, Inc., known around town as “The Hunger Farm,” is launching a new Veggie Van program to bring organic, locally grown produce to food deserts in our community. WHRI describes a food desert as “a geographic area where affordable and nutritious food is difficult to obtain, particularly for those without access to an automobile.”

Here’s a little demographic data for you:

Thank you, dear readers, for dishing out so much new foodie gossip that we have to do a follow-up blog.  Our little #wacotown is growing up to be delicious!

A GOOD SIGN: Saltgrass at Legend’s Crossing
They are now hiring a manager in Waco, which hints that this is a done deal.

Firehouse subs will open this week.

I just spoke with Firehouse representatives Junior Chambliss and Mike McCown and they told me the restaurant will be open to the public beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Check out another opportunity to eat a delicious farm-to-table meal with our friends from Homestead Heritage! Don’t worry about getting turkey-ed out before the big day: the menu offers a fresh take on standard Thanksgiving fare.

The star of the evening will be sage and garlic roasted Cornish game hen (raised on the farm) with apple sausage stuffing. Also on the menu are dishes made with Homestead pumpkins, sweet potatoes, apples, and green beans. I can’t wait to try the caramelized pumpkin soup with sage crème fraiche!

One More Bite:  All this talk of sage has me inspired to make a delicious fall cocktail! Click here for the recipe for a Sage Brown Derby. The key to bring out the sage flavor is to slap the leaf between your hands before adding it to the drink. Cheers!

Hey, who wants to go to Chili's on Thursday?

I've been given the heads up by our friend Venée Hummel that Chili's is having a give-back day to support Communities in Schools from 10:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, which I have to think is the entirety of their opening hours that day.
