One More Bite

The WacoFork Blog

So we launched this little venture a little less than six months ago. And when we launched it, almost immediately, people began to ask us "Are you going to have an iPhone app?"

Our answer: absolutely. Hopefully soon.

It's a weird day in the news (sports news) and I feel like my attempts at wittiness in regard to whatever I choose to have for lunch will be too trivial.

I'm as narcissistic as the next guy, but I recognize that the fate of our local university, or at least its ties to the once-great Big 12, is in jeopardy. So I'm disinclined to rattle on about food. For the record, I believe Baylor is a great school with an outstanding athletic department and the Bears will be fine in the long run. And I'm a Red Raider who has struggled to love Baylor for many years, so that's no piddly vote of confidence.

In the void of restaurant chatter, though, I will remind everyone in the WacoFork family that we are giving one of you an iPad2 sometime soon. Sometime soon meaning sometime between now and whenever we reach 1,000 reviews. We are currently at 534 reviews, which is about 100 more than when we announced this new contest four weeks ago. So we'll leave it up to you to predict when we'll reach the mark.

Wow! I don't think I've ever been more excited about the beginning of the school year than I am this year.

It helps that I'm not actually in school. It also helps that the beginning of the school year has meant a big boost in traffic for us. To that end, I'd like to send out a thank you to my pal Sarah Lake, who coordinator Baylor graduate school orientation and included WacoFork coupons in the orientation packets. That's our way of saying welcome back to the Baylor community, we want you on board at WacoFork.com.

For those who are new to WacoFork — and since we've only been a thing since early April that might be everybody — here's our deal: we're a forum for the community of people in Waco who enjoy dining out.

You see what I did there?

By posing the "I WacoFork Waco" sign in between Baylor legends Grant Teaff and Mike Singletary, and then using a fairly ambiguous question headline, I created a double question. Will it be a victorious season for Baylor? We'll have to wait and see. The possibilities are promising, though, and that's not something the Bears have been able to say very often since Coach Teaff left the Baylor sideline. But now the names Art Briles and Robert Griffin are on everyone's lips in the same way that Teaff and Singletary used to be.

I'm not sure what should go first here, so I'm gonna sort of blurt it all at once.

As stated in yesterday's blog, we're extremely excited about the upcoming months with school back in session and this town coming back to life as, hopefully, the weather cools off. We have a current contest running, but we also can't wait to announce the next big thing.

The "WacoFork It" contest is still going. You still have plenty of time to get your entries in by Labor Day. We've decided the winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to a Waco steak house. For a refresher on the contest, go here.

That said, we are going to give away another iPad2. I repeat, WE ARE GOING TO GIVE AWAY ANOTHER IPAD2!

How about a mid-week quiz?

Notice the picture of a bottle of Virgil's Root Beer accompanying this blog. I drank the contents of this bottle during lunch today. If root beer gets any better, I haven't tasted it. The bottle, which was dazzling in and of itself, promoted itself as "Special Edition Bavarian Nutmeg" flavor.

I must be a glass half full type of person because right now, the day after Independence Day, I'm thinking the summer is only half over and I still have a vacation ahead of me and pretty soon after that it will be football season I'm even optimistic enough to think the NFL labor situation will be resolved in time to begin the regular season as scheduled.

Just in case you were wondering, the glass half empty perspective would be that we're less than halfway through the Central Texas summer heat, there's quite a few people taking vacations or at least vacating town for a while so things are slow, and there's a distinct possibility we don't even have Dallas Cowboys football to look forward to until mid-October, if then.

Just wanted to wish everyone a happy Independence Day.

Hope you're enjoying a good backyard barbecue with friends and family or something of the like. If you're having a slow 4th of July, there's still plenty of time to get downtown for a late dinner followed by the fireworks presentation by the river.

I thought I'd share a few location ideas for the "WacoFork It" contest, to help get your creative juices flowing:

Outside of Waco... Empire State Building, Sears Tower, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Neuschwanstein Castle, The Taj Mahal, under water somewhere tropical like Hawaii (probably need to laminate it first to make it waterproof), on a beach, the Golden Gate Bridge

In or near Waco... Cameron Park, Cameron Park Zoo, on top of the Alico (is that even possible?), with the Baylor bears, one of our many museums/halls of fame, the Lake Waco wetlands, your favorite restaurant, the Suspension Bridge, in the air while skydiving, on a roller coaster at Six Flags

I could probably keep going, but you get the idea. Be creative! Here's a link to the PDF file to get you started.

Everyone is wondering what our next contest will be. People are talking about it. Many have asked me.

Okay, at least one person for sure asked me about it. And we mentioned it on Facebook and it received "likes" so we assume you're chomping at the bit.
