This hasn't been the most active week on the WacoFork blog. But that's because I've been spreading the gospel of WacoFork by playing in charity golf tournaments. That is to confess, I've devoted more time to golf than blogging.

That's just going to happen from time to time, friends. Don't worry, I'm still as dedicated to informing the WacoFork nation as ever. But it's summer and golf has to be played, especially when the high temperature dips below 90 degrees as it did on Thursday.

Progress report: Freebirds rising

For the past couple of months, I've let news of the developing Freebirds location sit on the back burner.

I feel like many of our town's restaurant fans know this is happening and I'm not one to go after cheap blog hits just by blurting the word "Freebirds" once or twice a week.

I enjoyed a nice breakfast at the Downtown Farmers Market on Saturday, sipping coffee from Dichotomy and eating a whole mess of crepes from Co-Town Crepes.

I think I might love crepes more than Cal Naughton Jr.

Happy June, everybody.

I feel a bit relieved today. Since it's June, it means that it's ok for the weather to be scorching hot. I know this is kind of dubious, but here's what I mean: It's hot. Ok. But it's June so it's supposed to be hot. It's summer and we can get through this together; maybe even have a little fun along the way.

Sometimes life is a chess match.

This is not the most uplifting of metaphors because it means that sometimes we are all put in a position where it is completely necessary to be combative and manipulative. But that's just the way it is sometimes.

Where does Coach Mulkey wanna eat?

Every now and then, my paths as a sportswriter and restaurant blogger cross as I bump into one of Waco's sports personalities.

It seem like we have more of them than ever before, doesn't it? I mean there's been people like Michael Johnson and LaDainian Tomlinson for a while, right? But now we have people like Art Briles and RG3 and PJ3 and Scott Drew and Brittney Griner and a whole bunch of other men's and women's hoops stars.

I've been reprimanded and I need to correct something. But I still don't think I'm completely wrong.

I wrote last week that the new Mexicano Bar & Grill at Central Texas Marketplace would be opening on May 31. That's the grand opening, but the restaurant launched with a soft opening late last week. So I sort of got that not quite right.

Belated Fried-day: in loving memory

Officially speaking, Memorial day is a day when we honor the men and women who died in combat serving our country.

But I'm bending the rules a bit today. My grandfather, Milton "Papa" Conine served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He survived the war, but only by the grace of God.

The WacoFork wire alerted me this week that the Mexicano Bar & Grill at Central Texas Marketplace would be opening this week.

Close but no cigar.

(For some reason that escapes me, your fearless restaurant blogger has failed to dine at Franklin in Austin. It's this year's biggest BBQ sensation and I'm not one to miss something like that. Don't worry, I'll get there. My friend Wes Kitten has been there twice and writes about it for us today. He graciously let me borrow this photo and text from his blog. The photo shows folks waiting in line for the privelege of scarfing some Franklin barbecue.)

I first heard about Franklin from a friend. He said that you have to get there around 9 a.m. for their 11 a.m. opening and they sell out in an hour. He said a certain publication named it not only the best BBQ in Texas, but the best BBQ in the U.S.
