Poor management!!

★ Reviewed by kenyas on December 28, 2012

We have been to Tokyo several times in the past & enjoyed it but tonight was a completely different experience! First they have now decided to charge you $5 if you share a meal. They even refused to let my two year old have an empty plate unless they charged him for it. Even after I told them he would only eat a little of my rice they insisted he had to eat it off my plate or he would be charged. The drinking glass came out cracked but they did replace it. THEN, the check came. First of all, we had a $5 plate share charge on our bill EVEN though we had gone ahead & ordered our child a $9 kid's meal so we had to ask to have that removed. Then, our party & the party seated next to us both had living socials. We were two separate groups with two separate checks who were seated next to each other at the same huge table. The waitress first comes out & says we are not allowed to use the LivingSocial mobile app & must have it printed out. My husband showed them that it clearly says that you can show the mobile app so the male manager (who said he was new after we asked several times) FINALLY agreed to that but then said we could not use our voucher after all because the other party was using one! Seriously? I explained that we were two separate parties but they were adamant. They even stated that we should have told them when we walked in that we had a LivingSocial & they would have sat us at a different table in the restaurant. That is ridiculous! THEY are the ones trying to fill tables so that they can use the 1 waitress & 1 Hibachi chef who were working. It was VERY clear that this manager does NOT care about good customer service & that they are so desperate for money that they are nitpicking & adding on these extra charges to up people's bills. We walked away with a REALLY bad taste in our mouths & will NOT be back! Unless you want to be up charged & nickel & dimed to death STEER Clear of Tokyo & go somewhere else instead!

Not Happy

★★ Reviewed by txlisabeth on September 15, 2012

My son and I like to go to this restaurant from time to time. This time service was terrible and while we didn't sit at a hibachi, we did order a hibachi dinner and did not receive everything that was included. When we ordered dessert, the waiter did not even ask us what flavor ice cream we wanted, just brought us something. No water or tea refills. The sushi was good, that is the only positive thing I can say.

Change brings Change

★★★★★ Reviewed by lennon on August 8, 2012

My wife and I first tried Tokyo when it first opened and our experience left something to be desired. We heard from a friend that the restaurant has since gone through a top to bottom staff change, so we decided to give them another chance.
We ordered the Love Hibachi Dinner for Two and two sushi rolls: "The Burning Man" and "The Chef's Special Roll". When the Hibachi Chef came to prepare the food, we were surprised by the jumbo size of the shrimp he was preparing as well as the Scallions, Steak and Chicken which are included in the meal. The Hibachi meal was as good as you can find anywhere in the area, but the biggest surprise was the sushi!! We later met the new Manager and found out they actually brought they sushi chef in from Houston with them, along with most of the kitchen staff. We will definitely be going back to sample some more of the sushi rolls before the week is out!! Yeah, it's that good!!

Hibachi and Sushi

★★★★ Reviewed by Stephanie on June 1, 2011

Look....when it comes to hibachi and sushi in Waco, it's always hit or miss. I've tried Tokyo 3 times, and I really have never been disappointed. And maybe I always come on a really slow night, but I get the same waiter (waitress?) and she's a doll. There may be a language barrier at times, but get over it. The staff are all very friendly and eager to please.

I've been to their sushi bar and watched the sushi chef make my sushi, and he did the job well.
I've also sat at the hibachi tables and had a blast with a small table of four. The chef even let me come up to the grill and learn how to flip an egg. Pretty neat if you ask me.
I'm happy about this little addition.

Only for sushi...

Reviewed by Leah_V on May 1, 2011

I did love their house salad because of the dressing and the crab pieces in it- but the new management got rid of the crab.
plus they changed the menu and raised prices.

ALL THE WAITERS ARE TERRIBLE.

I still would go but only for sushi

Easy to forget

★★ Reviewed by derickbailey on April 20, 2011

In a town full of hibachi grills and sushi, this place is easy to forget. The food was ok, the environment was ok, the wait staff was ok. None of it was anything special and nothing stood out as a place that I would frequent. There are fare better options for hibachi and sushi, within a few miles.
