The Califorina-based burger restaurant In-N-Out, which first came to Texas in 2011 and has since opened 16 stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, has plans to come to Waco.
In an email interview with Carl Van Fleet, In-N-Out's vice president for planning and development, we learned the burger joint is getting closer to opening a Waco location.
We told you about the new cafe/froyo joint called Yazzi's when it opened in November. Like many restaurants, it purposely opened quietly and is now ready for a more public "Grand Opening."
Yazzi's is making a big branding push this week, including sponsoring the Baylor Lady Bears game against Kansas on Wednesday night. This will probably prompt folks to ask "what is Yazzi's?" — a question I've heard a few times since November. My answer has been that it's a sandwich, salad and froyo place in the Bagby shopping center across form Baylor, kind of where Big Daddy's used to be.
Cafe Homestead's first special dinner event of 2013 will fall on Valentine's Day. If you're looking to make it special for someone special, then this is a slam dunk.
The dinner will feature French cuisine at two seatings — 5:30 and 7:30. The price is set at $48 per person. Here's an overview of the menu:
There's a new spot for catfish and chicken near Baylor as Louisiana Catfish & Chicken opened on La Salle in January. I stopped in for info, not lunch, on Monday, but it smelled great and I'll stop in again soon for eats.
My friend Kaley Eggers alerted me to the presence of this new joint. She was at the Heart of Texas Fair & Rodeo back in the fall when she and some friends came across these folks at a booth. They dined and visited and learned that there would soon be a Louisiana catfish place opening in Waco.
The question on quite a few Waco-restaurant-lovers minds these days hovers around the possibility of Indian food.
Recently, an Indian food stand popped up at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market, though I spoke with the person that runs it and he said he's sticking with farmers markets for the time being. And I've been asked by development-minded folks if I thought Indian food would work in a specific location in town.
I'm currently sitting at the bar at Dichotomy at Croft, as I'm wont to do a couple of times a week. In case anyone is interested, I tend to alternate between here, Common Grounds and Starbucks during the working portion of my day. Who needs an office, right?
Dichotomy, which is in the planning stages of a coffee and spirits bar downtown across the street from Bank of America on Austin Ave., has been operating out of The Croft since November. Until about a week ago they were open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Well that's the vehicle that popped to mind when I caught up with the La Lola Loca food truck on the Baylor campus today. I believe the picture with this blog explains why I thought of The Muppets band. But I should probably offer a little more info on the new Baylor food truck.
We told you a couple of weeks ago about the plans for a new restaurant at 1401 Speight, plans that were made a bit more intriguing by the fact that the restaurateurs were outsourcing their menu.
For a couple of months, the website 1401speight.com gave viewers a chance to suggest the type of food the restaurant would serve. Then they narrowed the choices to street tacos, gourmet franks and sausages and a burger bar. Then they began taking votes.
Obviously, we're big fans of Taqueria El Crucero, as is a pretty significant segment of WacoFork regulars, so we're excited about a couple of new developments at Crucero.
Beginning tomorrow, Crucero will be open Friday and Saturday evenings. They'll open up at the usual time of 7 a.m., but they'll stay open until 8 p.m. That's 12 more hours per week when you have the opportunity to dine at one of Waco's best local Mexican food joints.
One of our town's longest-running, crowd-sourcing traditions is open mic night at Common Grounds. I'm guessing a pretty big chunk of our WacoFork audience has at one point or another seen their friends perform either inside or outside at Common Grounds on open mic night.
It's good, solid, mid-week fun.
