One More Bite

The WacoFork Blog

Attention Waco photographers, WacoFork is looking for some quality photos of iconic Waco locations, landmarks, buildings, murals (Wacotown), restaurants, etc., and we need your help. We put out the call last week via Facebook and Twitter, and we've already received some excellent shots from our friend, Brett (see the photo on this blog post). We could still use more great photos, so please help us out.

After opening its first Waco store in the Westview Village Shopping Center in November, WiseGuys is now looking to expand its turf.

Co-owner and operator Bill Nychay emailed us to tell us the Chicago-style sandwich joint is looking around downtown to open a second store. WiseGuys clearly wants to get closer to the Baylor crowd and maybe in on the new-stadium hype.

A few weeks ago, we were asked on Facebook what was going in the new building next to Taco Cabana. We quickly found out that two restaurant and/or retail spaces were available but couldn't get a name.

Now we have one. Papa John's is expanding its Waco operations into this location, according to Kenny Stevens from The Reid Company. Obviously, this will be convenient for some, especially Baylor students who live on campus or in near-campus apartments. But it's also not the most exciting thing ever since we 1) already have this restaurant in town and 2) usually have Papa John's delivered, so as long as we're in delivery range, it probably doesn't matter too much if there's a new one. It's a good thing for Papa John's, though, as they will be able to cover more territory more efficiently.

It's time for Vitek's to properly celebrate the Gut Pak's victory in the recent CookingChannelTV.com College Eats Bracket Challenge.

In case you weren't aware, the Gut Pak outlasted 32 other food choices from college-town eateries around the country in March and early-April. So Vitek's is throwing a party from 4:30 p.m. to close on Thursday at their Speight Ave location.

Over the weekend, I saw a picture of one of the Dichotomy crew taking a sledgehammer to a wall, which I took as a sure sign that the progress of our new coffee bar has shifted gears in its progress toward becoming a reality.

Sure enough, co-proprietor Brett Jameson confirmed that construction has begun on the inside and outside of the building. They're hoping to be open by September. Just a heads up, in case you didn't already know, you can currently find Dichotomy's coffee offerings at their location inside the Croft Art Gallery or at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market.

I just stopped off at Vitek's to check on their fundraiser for West and found they still have plenty of T-shirts available. They're $10 and say "#PrayForWest" and they're also available at George's and George's in Hewitt.

That's an easy way to give a little help to our neighbors.

About a week ago, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported Rusty Taco will be going into the new shopping center anchored by Aldi on Valley Mills Drive. They quoted the shopping center owner and about the same time we received an email from David Weaver from Rusty Taco confirming that the Texas-based taco chain had signed a lease.

On Monday, I was in Fort Worth and, wanting to provide the freshest information to you, WacoFork friends, I drove over to Dallas to check out the Rusty Taco restaurant on Greenville Avenue. Pictured are a shrimp taco, a breakfast taco (they serve them all day) with chorizo, eggs and cheese, and a fried chicken taco.

You know it's been a rough week when you see an American flag at half-mast and you can think of several reasons why it might be that way.

Such was the case as I left West around noon today and noticed the flag at Greg May Chevrolet at half-mast. After last night's horrific explosion and subsequent fires, I wanted to check on the Czech Stop and Little Czech Bakery along with other West establishments. I admit I didn't know what to expect — people rallying together; people worn out and stranded; stores open and going out of their way to serve people; stores closed; heck, I seriously doubted whether I would even be able to get to West.

I just finished reading all the rules for the Stache Dash bike race that Common Grounds is hosting April 27.

It's kind of complicated, but that's what makes it so cool. It's called an alley cat race and your knowledge of the streets (and alleys) of Waco will give you as much of an advantage as your bicycle-riding ability. And if you've ever been a bicycle courier in Waco, then you probably have an unfair advantage.

There's a new donut joint coming to New Road.

Donut Hole has a sign and a temporary sign announcing "donuts coming soon." There's also promise of biscuits, croissants, kolaches and coffee. It's located in the little strip center directly across the street from the V.A. Hospital.
