Cafe Homestead is hosting a South of the Border Dinner on Oct. 19.
In case you're already wondering, this doesn't coincide with the interests of Baylor football fans as the dinner begins at 7 p.m., an hour after Baylor and Iowa State kickoff the Bears' homecoming game. So those crowds won't overlap. Well, you could probably do the dinner and make it to Floyd Casey by halftime, but Baylor games haven't been too entertaining after halftime if you know what I mean.
I recently noticed a taco truck on my morning commute to the office. It's called El Fogoncito and it's located in the parking lot of the Shell station at Franklin and New Road.
It was actually closed when I stopped by, so I proceeded up the road to Rosa's. So I can't tell you much about El Fogoncito. I highly suspect it's about the same as the other taco trucks.
The minute I walked into The Boundain Shack, I wished I was going to dine there and not just collect the restaurant's address and phone number for a listing.
It was about 11 this morning and I already had a lunch planned with a friend that was not going to take place in deep Robinson. Also, I ate brisket and delicious potato salad for dinner on Tuesday night at Coach's in McGregor, so I still felt as if a salad for lunch was in order at noon on Wednesday.
As a general rule the rest of this fall, weekends when the Baylor Bears football team plays in town will be much more active around here than when Baylor is off like this weekend or when the Bears play away games.
For example, a week from now West Virginia comes to town as Baylor kicks off Big 12 play. Two weeks after that, the Iowa State Cyclones show up for Homecoming and three weeks after that, the Oklahoma Sooners come in for a Thursday night game.
If you've been wondering where I've been lately, just assume that football (and maybe golf) have taken priority. But rest assured that if I come across restaurant news, it will be passed along to you. Like this:
Dichotomy is waiting on its contractors to make final finishes, some of which involve parts arriving in the mail and being installed. When that's done, I'm betting the Dichotomy folks work around the clock to open their doors as quickly as they can.
The rain is dampening my motivation today.
Don't misread that sentiment. I love the rain. We need a day like this once a month. But it's making me wonder how many of the weekend's festivities either 1) will get canceled, or 2) should get canceled.
Cafe Homestead's next dinner event is coming up quick: this Saturday with one seating at 7 p.m.
Normailly, all I need to do is mention the menu style and one or two of the highlights here, but this month's menu is a little more complicated. Cafe Homestead is rolling out an Ethiopian feast, easily one of the most exotic menus they've offered. So this month, I'm going to give descriptions of the main course items.
Full disclosure, I haven't been to Common Grounds' backyard since they moved the stage to make more room for bigger shows. That will probably change this week as there's a bunch going on this weekend.
This is exciting because, by raising the stage slightly and making the yard bigger, Common Grounds can have bigger acts and ensure that everyone in the audience has a good chance to see the performers on the stage.
You have to admire a restaurateur like Sergio Garcia for constantly trying new things.
Sergio, who formerly had Siete Mares and then briefly a taqueria on 4th street, now own Sergio's on Austin Avenue. Part of that venture has included experimenting with his front space. For a while, it was a breakfast counter/greasy spoon deal. Now it's Robin Jeep's Natural Cafe.
A week ago, I wrote a semi-preview for the new HEB that opened at Valley Mills and Interstate-35. In the blog, I confirmed that the store would include a Flaming Bird cafe. In the same blog, I also promised a follow-up, which I failed to deliver because other pursuits came up during the weekend. Such is life.
Earlier this week, other matters continued to take precedence, but I finally needed to buy groceries today, so it was the logical day to get back to earlier promises. One of the questions that remained last week was whether or not the Flaming Bird would have beer on tap. It does not. But it does have sandwiches, pizza and grilled chicken. A point of correction, the Flaming Bird doesn't sell rotisserie chicken as stated in last week's blog.
