One More Bite

The WacoFork Blog

Here's the ninth installment of Tuesday Trivia, which we'll be running all summer.

We're tying trivia to new music releases since that happens on Tuesdays, so you'll have some framework for my question's origin. But I'm not going to frame the question so that you'll just be able to look up new releases and find the answer. I can hopefully make it a bit trickier than that.

Kill the fatted enchilada, for my sunglasses were lost, but now they're found.

It's Monday and a holiday week and I used up all my good new-restaurant news last week. So today, you're going to read about my sunglasses saga. Here it goes: On Saturday, I realized my sunglasses were missing. I beat myself up a little as I had purchased fancy Ray Ban sunglasses to try to prevent that exact thing from happening. "I'll spend a little more money on sunglasses so that I will be motivated to take care of them and keep up with them," I thought to myself.

Loving Wacotown

I came to a profound realization the other day: pretty soon there will be a Guitar Center and a Freebirds not only in our town, but both within a 10-minute walk of my house.

To be clear, Freebirds is already here as it opened in September of 2012 and Guitar Center will be opening in mid-July.

I love sports and I really like the city of Chicago. I could even say that I love it, but I feel like I need to get to know it a little better before I go that far. I also really like the city of Boston as we got acquainted for the first time last summer.

But I do not care about the Stanley Cup Finals.

I have a couple of issues/problems today and I would like your advising, WacoFork friends (they're not really problems, they're more like petty complaints but I am appealing for your sympathy or judgement, whichever you feel applies).

My first issue is that I've come to the realization that I don't want what's good for me and I can prove this with a simple illustration involving froyo and milkshakes.

Growing up in Waco, I can remember waking up early on Saturday mornings to go to breakfast with my parents. My brothers would never wake up early enough to go with us, but I was never one to pass up a good breakfast. We would hit the usual spots like Harold Waite's or the Red Brick Grill (closed years ago and replaced with a Blue Kettle, which has sense been replaced with a new 7-11 at the corner of Highway 84 and Highway 6), and occasionally we would go to iHop if we didn't just go for donuts. When Cracker Barrel opened out in Lacy Lakeview, we added that one to our lineup as well. In recent years, my wife and I have enjoyed places like Cafe Cappuccino, Leal's and El Ranchito for a good breakfast or breakfast burrito.

Well, kids, summer is here, so you should know that this exists: Barefoot Ski Ranch Cable Park and the BSR Bar & Grill.

It's about a 15-minute drive from most prominent locations within our humble burg, on the way to Mexia. It's about as country redneck a thing as I can imagine myself really wanting to do. The way it works is they have a pulley system of sorts that drags patrons around a circular lake while the patrons ski on a wake board. In other words, it's the best way to go wake boarding if you don't own a boat.

Green means go to Dave's

I was riding to Dave's Burger Barn with my buddy Wes Kitten today. I was thinking we were on the way to see if Wes could conquer the Zipper Ripper challenge.

But when I asked him if he'd done anything to specifically prepare for it, he just laughed. He had no intention of taking the Zipper Ripper challenge. He just wanted a good burger.

Goodbye, old friend

The heavy-metal teen punk in me wants to sit outside the McDonald's location on Valley Mills and listen to "Appetite for Destruction."

I'm not gonna do it, but I'm glad that part of me still exists. The sight of a demolition crew taking down the old McDonald's was enough to get me to pull over and snap a photo. McDonald's is tearing down this old building in order to build a new one in the same spot.

We told you last week about Sironia's Cupcakes & Cocktails event coming up this Thursday. This is your reminder, so take heed because this could be a blast and quite possibly the highlight of your week.

Sironia will host the party in its store and cafe from 5-7 p.m. Sloppy Joe's Brian and Jeremy will play music and announce door-prize winners every 15 minutes. Prizes range from candle sets to $500 gift certificates. While you're waiting to see if you won the next door prize, there will be plenty of cocktails, cupcakes and other appetizers to hold your attention.
