On freelancing, spitballing and a journey to an elite steakhouse

Hey, let's play write your own caption for the photo with this blog that features Baylor coach Art Briles chatting with Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan.

Here's mine: Baylor coach Art Briles asks Redskins coach Mike Shanahan if he's tried the coffee frozen yogurt at Oso's Oh So Good Frozen Yogurt.

Actually, I heard they did go for froyo at Oso's while the Redskins brass was in town. Of course, I overheard a lot of things while I was doing some freelance sportswriting on Wednesday at RG3's pro day at the Allison Indoor Practice Facility.

Like this: apparently Shanahan and Redskins owner Dan Snyder dined at Hooters on Tuesday night. Or they had a beer there. I'm not sure. Here's a link to the Washington Post sports blog where I found the story.

I have to say, I'm not at all impressed with the Redskins higher-ups on this one. They couldn't find a more sophisticated place to have a beer than Hooters? Snyder owns the team! Hooters is a fine place to go with your buddies when you are 17 or 27, and it's a great place to watch the NCAA Tournament, but if you own a pro sports franchise you shouldn't go anywhere that doesn't serve 30-year-old Scotch. I'm sorry, that's just how I see it and I don't think it's unreasonable.

The reason I think they just had a beer there is because they apparently took RG3 to dinner on Tuesday evening. Griffin said he and his fiancé dined with Shanahan. Griffin said he ordered filet mignon, which I assumed didn't come from Hooters. It's good to see our local hero has some savoir faire.

I didn't ask during RG3's press conference where he had said filet as I was working for another organization and wanted to maintain professional decorum. I tried to ask him as he was walking away from the podium and I was gathering my recorder at the end of the presser, but he was already being whisked away by his agent.

But speaking of steak, I'm on an adventure at the moment to have one of the best steaks in America. My friend Dr. Shawn Skeen and I are road-tripping to Chicago where he will be attending the American Cardiology Conference, while I will be increasing my need for a cardiologist by stuffing myself with juicy, flavorful red meat and probably beer or whiskey.

We'll be dining at Gibson's, one of the top 10 steakhouses in the United States. More on that Saturday.

In the meantime, special thanks to Stephen Evans for his Salsa Exploration series this week. He helped me complete my RG3 sandwich on vacation bread.
