Exactly six weeks ago, I wrote in this blog about Mi Tequila opening a second location in the Austin Avenue space formerly occupied by Sebas Cocina.
Then on Tuesday I learned that the space will soon have yet another new tenant.
I spoke with Sergio Garcia, who formerly owned Siete Mares on Dutton and currently (at least for the next three days) owns El Potosino on 4th Street. Garcia said this is his last week of running El Potosino. After this week, he'll turn his attention to re-launching his Mexican seafood restaurant at, you guessed it, the location formerly occupied by Sebas Cocina and Mi Tequila.
Garcia is acting on the notion that there are so many Mexican food restaurants in town, that offering the same fare as so many other places limits his potential customer base, especially considering he gained a great reputation for his Mexican seafood while at Siete Mares.
He hopes to open on Austin Avenue in early March.
Meanwhile, another new Mexican food restaurant is about to open in Central Texas Marketplace.
El Mexicano Grill and Bar promises via a banner out front that it's coming soon. It's about time something moved into that spot. A sign on the door is still announcing Backyard Burger closing at the end of 2009.
Right now our Mexican food category contains 68 listings. Add Sergio's, which will be the name of Garcia's new place on Austin Ave, and Mexicano Grill and Bar, and subtract the second Mi Tequila location and El Potosino and there will still be 68. No, wait, I forgot about the new El Conquistador, which will be moving into the building that used to be La Fiesta on N. 19th Street. So that's 69.
Rolling out a new sushi joint
The sushi restaurant in Central Texas Marketplace has signage in place. It's going to be called Wako Roll.
When I reported on this sushi restaurant three weeks ago, Park, the owner, told me he expected to be open in February, which I took to mean by the end of the month. That still feels like a solid prediction.
More news as it becomes available, including the derivation of the spelling of Wako in the name. Why not Waco? Or Wacko? Though I suppose wacko roll could mean something else.
One more … make that two more bites: Bubba's Burgers and Such on Hewitt Drive is currently closed. Not sure if it's going to reopen. All the decor is still in place, though the note in the window posted by the landlord is not a good omen for fans of this burger joint. … Club Sandwich will still be in its current location until Friday, but then it will be taking a break. Last I heard, Youngdae is looking for a space and planning to debut a food truck later this year.
