It's time to order pizza and gather around the TV

I'm tempted to write about how I like the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl and, for that matter, the BCS National Championship game more than the holidays. I don't know that I really believe that, but I'm tempted to make a case for it. So I will.

It's an easy thing to state now that the holidays are over and it's the longest possible time until they'll be around again. But I still kind of think it's true because the holidays aren't really about what they're about. But NFL playoff football and the national championship game are almost completely about football. Some people, I realize, like to watch the Super Bowl for the commercials. Some people, perhaps, would claim that Super Bowl Sunday is the one day of the year when we watch television strictly for the commercials. Those people aren't invited to my house to eat pizza and watch the Super Bowl.

Ahh, pizza. I haven't written enough about pizza in the 9 months since WacoFork began. Today, however, seems like an extremely appropriate day to write about pizza.

As mentioned, the holidays have passed and with them the time of year when we really make an effort to cook extravagantly for our friends and family. This goes on from Thanksgiving right on through New Year's Day. Case in point, on New Year's Day, my friends fed me ham and mashed potatoes and black-eyed peas and then, on January 2 while watching the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl, some other friends and I made chili and chocolate chip cookies.

But we're beyond that now and it seems we've reached a time when it's preferable to take an easier route and just order pizza, either for pick-up or delivery. And it just so happens that tonight presents two possible — and diametrically opposed — occasions for you and your buddies to order pizza and watch television.

The one that's obvious to me is the BCS National Championship featuring LSU and Alabama at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN. But I know that's not obvious to some people because I've heard that there are groups of females gathering tonight to watch The Bachelor, which begins at 7 p.m. on ABC.

Does the fact that The Bachelor will be broadcast on the over-the-air channel while LSU-Alabama will be on cable indicate that Disney values its The Bachelor viewership (read: women) over the football game audience? Yeah, probably. I've come to believe there's this idea called "Girl World." Every now and then, I'll discover something happening in "Girl World" which I have neither the ability nor desire to fully comprehend. Not long ago, Pinterest came to my attention three times within a 24-hour period and it was easy to identify as a "Girl World" thing. Same deal with The Bachelor within the last 36 hours. You know what Disney figured out? "Girl World" moves the meter and moves product. Perhaps that's why The Bachelor is on ABC and the BCS National Championship game is relegated to cable.

No problem. I have access to ESPN. And pizza.

Just so this blog has some restaurants-in-Waco usefulness, I'll run down pizza options in case you are planning to pick up a pie for either your "Girl World" or "Sports World" television watching. Baris, Mama Baris and Rosati's are all closed on Mondays. If one of those is your go-to option, don't fret, you have alternatives. If you want local, consider Poppa Rollo's, Shorty's Pizza Shack or Food For Thought. Past that, you have your usual chain options and your opinion on which of those is better than the others is probably as good as mine, so I won't bore you.

One more bite: I will actually be pretty interested on Tuesday to see which gets better ratings — The Bachelor or the BCS title game. Or perhaps even more telling these days, which one trends bigger on Twitter. … For our local polling purposes: Where do you prefer to get your pizza pie?
