Camp Freebirds: tent city filling up

Camp Freebirds is almost at capacity.

At 1:30 this afternoon, I made my latest trip past Waco's newest burrito restaurant, set to open at 10:30 Monday morning. For those who have been living under a rock, Freebirds will have an opening party and invite the first 25 people in line into the restaurant for an early lunch along with vouchers for a free burrito per week for the next year.

As of a few minutes ago, there are either 24 or 25 people in line. Jeff Keith was waiting to join the list and, according to the rest of the campers, he was going to be the 24th person. Then another gentleman arrived ready to sign up. However, there was some indication that one of the campers might have left.

For anyone who waited until Sunday afternoon to get in line, there might still be enough reason to go get an alternate spot as there's a chance others could drop out. But anyone who's been there for more than 24 hours already is likely to hang in there.

Speaking of campers in it for the long haul, the first campers — Richard Canova and Haigon Moon Shine from Tennyson Middle School — looked a little wobbly. Spending two nights on a parking lot with no mattress will do that, I suppose. They were a little sun burned too, but still in good spirits.

Keith, excited to sign up, shared his burrito theory with me. He said that whether people prefer Freebirds or Chipotle depends on which restaurant they encountered first.

That's a decent theory.
