One More Bite

The WacoFork Blog

It's Saturday and there's football on television. This feels good.

Granted it's high school football and the teams are from Florida and Alabama, but it's football and soon there's going to be college football on my television on Saturdays. That makes me happy.

I stopped by the Heart of Texas Coliseum this morning to check up on the status of Saturday's Margarita and Salsa Festival.

VIP tables are sold out, but chances are if you're trying to decide today whether or not to attend this event, you weren't concerned about reserving a VIP table. The good news, if this is something you want to do, is that $30 general admission tickets were still available as of 11 a.m. today.

What do you get for $30? Quite a bit actually.

A week ago, Cafe Homestead rolled out a new feature of what is already one of Waco's most unique dining experiences. The restaurant, part of the Homestead Heritage community and its farm, launched a series of special evening meals with a Farm to Table dinner.

I attended with a group of good, loyal WacoForkers. It was delicious. It was well organized and efficiently run. In short, it was one of the best dining experiences I've had anywhere in a while. The photo accompanying this blog shows the main course with a ribeye and cheese and jalapeƱo grits.

As promised last week, I didn't wait very long at all before ordering a New York-style hot dog at the new downtown restaurant Metro.

As proof, the picture accompanying this blog is me holding a Coney Island cheese coney, which is featured on the Metro menu. In case you were wondering, the cheese coney and fries is available for a nice price of $4.75 (reader's note: the Shiner Bock in the picture cost extra).

When I last wrote to you, dear WacoFork reader, I mentioned the change in style and name of a certain downtown night spot.

Remember? The blog about Metro on Friday. Well if you don't remember, but you're reading this, you're probably on the blog page, so just scroll down a little and you'll find it.

Metro and the Legacy Cafe & Art Gallery joined a certain mini-revolution in downtown Waco. In case you haven't noticed, things have changed on the 700 block of Austin Ave. To further the revolution, Klassy Glass is hosting a Business After Hours in grand fashion on Thursday night.

I'm back from vacation and exceedingly excited about the upcoming months.

I would say I'm exceedingly excited about the fall, but I'm not going to pretend "the fall" is even close. Let's be honest, around here "the fall" doesn't start until almost Halloween. Until then, it's just the dying days of summer and summer, the hot part, sometimes doesn't die out until late September.

One year ago I departed from Iowa to a place where the crickets are bigger and the weather rises above the century mark. A land that has a claim to fame on every corner and the hospitality runs as rampant as gun licenses. It was a scary thing being new to a town a thousand miles from where I called home.

The month in reviews: July

July is gone and that's always kind of bittersweet.

July is definitely a fun month, what with Independence Day cook outs and fireworks. It's a good month to take vacation time with the family or friends. This year we had the Women's World Cup to get all worked up about. And, for the more traditional sports fans, there's always the Major League Baseball Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.

But on the other side of the coin, anytime you finish a month during which the high temperature never dipped below 100, well, maybe we're kind of glad to have survived that month and realize we're on the other side of it. A good friend of mine once said, "God gave Texas the heat because He knew we could handle it." So let's just smile and handle a few more days of this before cooler weather gets here.

In the beginning, Toph Whisnant felt as confident as he appeared.

He walked out of his office wearing his good, clean WacoFork T-shirt, an Alabama ball cap and aviator sunglasses that only added to his general bearing of determination.

Oh goodness, I've developed a habit of craving the Oso items on Taqueria El Crucero's menu.

As habits go this one is pretty safe. The green sauce packs a pretty good punch, but its nothing a splash of Coke won't settle.

Some of our users have experienced the Oso burrito. In fact, one of the first people to jump on board with WacoFork and begin writing reviews told me about the Oso. He insisted I show up at El Crucero and order an Oso with green sauce. It took some time, but I eventually took his suggestion and I'm glad I did.
