Vegetarian Week: Torchy's

I’m the grandson of a cattle rancher, so I’m not inclined to be a vegetarian. Even if I wanted to, it would be sort of a breech of family tradition. But I don’t have to worry about that because I don’t want to be a vegetarian.

But I see the value in being able to appreciate a lot of different ideas and interests. For example, I understand that not everyone loves football as much as I do. That is to say, I understand the concept, though I don’t really understand why. So I think everyone should at least be able to experience and appreciate football for a brief period, even if it’s just one game. And I think it’s easy to understand why so many people adore football.

That’s why I’m declaring this week Vegetarian Week on WacoFork. Of course, it helps that new WacoFork team member Melissa Whisnant is a vegetarian and is going to write a couple of blogs this week.

This was my plan for this week before I dined at Torchy’s on Sunday evening. But, as luck would have it, I ran into my friend Jeff, who had ordered an Independent. I asked him if he was a vegetarian and he said he wasn’t, but with ingredients as good as portobello strips, avocado and black beans, he could eat like one every now and then.

Good point.

So I’m back at Torchy’s for lunch and I’ve sampled the Independent and the Fried Avocado tacos. I’m not going to fake it here, I don’t think I like beans enough to be a vegetarian, but perhaps this is just the beginning of my experimentation with it. I think, for example, if I had the Fried Avocado without beans and lettuce, it would be perfect.

Maybe — and feel free to comment if you disagree — when a restaurant offers a vegetarian item, they feel the need to cram it with a lot of ingredients to make up for the fact that there’s no meat. I think I’m ready to be a less-is-more vegetarian for a couple of meals a week. I already like a dinner of Brussels sprouts and avocado.

Anyway, we’ll try to give you some new dining-out-vegetarian ideas. If you have any tips for us email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
