The Week of the Sandwich: DeMaria's BBQ Dagwood

I don't know if I'm getting better at taking pictures of food or if it's just pretty easy. I know that the photo accompanying this blog, featuring Tony DeMaria's BBQ's The Dagwood, came out fantastic.

It almost defies a carnivorous person to resist rushing over to Tony DeMaria's and ordering one as soon as possible. It really doesn't need any more words from me. The picture stands on its own.

But since I'm sitting here at my computer anyway, I'll offer a little more backstory.

During this, The Week of the Sandwich, I've written about some sandwiches around town and taken suggestions about where to find the best one. On our Facebook page, Tony DeMaria gave his two cents.

"You know another sandwich that is really good?" he wrote, "The Dagwood at DeMaria's BBQ — nudge, nudge."

That was all the invitation required.

Actually, I didn't know what The Dagwood was when I walked into DeMaria's. I reasoned that if it had barbecue between white bread then I would like it based on those parameters. Even more so if I could dip it in DeMaria's famous gravy. To my pleasant surprise, The Dagwood is a double-decker sandwich. Geoff DeMaria suggested I have mine mixed, with brisket on the bottom and sausage on top. Yes, please.

The DeMarias told me a customer began special ordering the sandwich several years ago. It existed as an off-menu item until about a year ago.

They took its name from the popular comic strip character Dagwood Bumstead because of the way he makes sandwiches. I guess they passed on the name "The Shaggy and Scoobie," which is where I would've taken it.

Search Dagwood Bumstead on Google images and you will see, in cartoon form, why the DeMarias chose to name this sandwich The Dagwood.

But, at the risk of seeming self-aggrandizing, I'm going to say the photo with this blog is actually more tantalizing than Dagwood's cartoon sandwich.
