News and notes: new restaurants otw

After a fair amount of speculation on Facebook this week about the new building going up behind Whataburger near Baylor (7th and Cleveland to be exact), I checked into it and have a little information to pass along.

Sorry, no specific restaurant names yet. But there is at least one new restaurant going into the building. A conversation with The Reid Company, the company leasing the space, revealed that one restaurant is almost set to go there, though they're not disclosing the name quite yet. They also have space for another restaurant in the building, but no takers yet.

Someone on Facebook said they heard it was Chick-Fil-A, but it's hard to imagine Chick-Fil-A sharing space with another restaurant in a building that size and even more difficult to imagine another restaurant wanting to join Chick-Fil-A given the kind of drive-thru line that Chick-Fil-A generates. I could be wrong about this, but that's my gut feeling. We'll stay on this.

While I was on the phone with The Reid Company, I also learned that they have a 6,500 square foot strip center about to go up on Franklin Avenue across from Raising Cane's. That facility will likely be the new home of new restaurants as well. We'll also keep you updated on that place as soon as we have more specific information.

SmashBurger ready for summer

I recently exchanged emails with Brad Brown of SmashBurger. He told me they are close to being able to get into their new facility in the Aldi shopping center on Valley Mills Drive.

Once they're able to start outfitting the space, it will be about 10 weeks until SmashBurger is ready to serve customers. So it's probably going to be between the middle of June and the middle of July before we officially have a SmashBurger.

A couple of newbies

What About Cupcakes? has opened a Baylor location as of this week. It's in the shopping center on Speight just across 14th Street from Scruffy Murphy's.

And another place that's been there for a little while, but recon just uncovered it recently is Taqueria Olympic Y Mariscos, which is in the old Siete Mares location.
