Jimmy John's strategy for taking over a big chunk of the area sandwich game will soon move into phase 2.
A quick stop by the Hewitt shopping center currently anchored by Rosati's on Monday revealed several different crews at diligent work preparing the new Jimmy John's store to open. It appeared electricians were readying the drive thru menu, while Jimmy John's staff members were meeting inside.
Oh yeah, here's the important thing: a sign in the window announced that the Hewitt Jimmy John's store will open November 15, which is a week from today.
The downtown crowd has been enjoying Jimmy John's since April. In that time, the restaurant has made two main impressions. Firstly, Jimmy John's makes a tasty sandwich. In fact, they make a variety of tasty sandwiches. Last week, I branched out from my usual choice of the Hunter's Club to order the Italian Night Club. I wasn't disappointed.
Secondly, Jimmy John's has proved it can deliver sandwiches incredibly quickly to its delivery area. Legend has it that a worker bee at the Veterans Affairs office near downtown picked up the phone to order a Jimmy John's sandwich and had scarcely hung up the phone before the sandwich arrived. Less than five minutes from picking up the phone to having a sandwich in hand.
I'll have to take his word for it as I live just outside of the reach of the downtown Jimmy John's delivery area and I assume I will be even farther outside the Hewitt store's delivery area. I suppose that puts me in no-man's land.
If only there were as many Jimmy John's as there are froyo shops.
However, perhaps soon there will be. Word on the street is that Jimmy John's is aiming to have four Waco locations within four years of its opening the downtown store last April. With a second one opening up already, I'd say they're ahead of pace.
