Restaurant Week began today, so my first priority was to get to Vitek's and order their featured menu item: the Sweet Potato Spud Pak.
If you don't do another thing for Restaurant Week, you should at least treat yourself to this. If you dig a Vitek's Gut Pak, just imagine a Gut Pak on a sweet potato. I can't sell it any better than that. With a large bottle of Coke, it cost me $11.04. If I spend a better $11 today, I'll be a double-happy man.
However, you should jump into Restaurant Week with reckless abandon and I'm going to tell you why.
One of the reasons, actually the main reason we're excited about Restaurant Week is because it's helping out Big Brothers Big Sisters. I've known about this organization for a long time, I guess, particularly since I began hearing the radio ads in which the voice talks about being inspired by his big brother in the program. Whether its with Big Brothers Big Sisters or any other type of relationship, mentoring a kid and giving that kid some guidance and inspiration for navigating life's choices is a great move.
But I became even better informed about the program through my friend Becky Murphy, who has been a Big Sister for a couple of years now. She consistently plans activities with her little, encourages her to take on challenges — even simple things like reading for fun — and generally shares life. In return, Becky has seen her little grow up from being shy and hesitant to a person who is eager to participate in an adult-like friendship.
It's a pretty fantastic endorsement of the program. To learn more about it, read this blog Becky wrote.
For a list of Restaurant Week participating restaurants and menu items, check out Friday's blog or the Restaurant Week website. I prescribe picking out three items and putting them on your food agenda for this week.
