Kuma is open and offering sushi in a swanky environment downtown.
We received the heads up earlier this week that Kuma would be launching with a soft opening, so, naturally, we were all over it. I landed at Kuma about 8 Tuesday night and enjoyed the scene while the staff found its rhythm.
Now, because it was a soft opening, everyone that dined there on Tuesday was cool about the pace. That will be a prerequisite for a few days, but I'm confident this will be a quality addition to the downtown dining scene.
I showed up with a couple of friends and we enjoyed spicy edamame, calamari, sushi, goat cheese-and-salmon nigiri, beef medallions, sea urchin and, because the liquor license is still in the mail, free beer and sake.
We also took a brief trip upstairs to check out the dance-club scene. We agreed this could be a quality downtown dance option. Put me down as into it.
The management tells me it will be open all this week, including until 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. Then, next week, they'll begin opening for lunch and dinner.
One more bite: Kuma is in the old Treff's location. Quality upgrade.
