You would think that writing this restaurant blog for the last three years would've led me to becoming a semi-regular at 1424. I can't explain why it hasn't, but it's something I want to change.
And, in a way, they're going to make that much easier for me in the near future. While dining at 1424 on Wednesday evening, I spoke with owner Aris Galanis about the new branch 1424 is opening on Franklin Ave.
The new place, which will be an order-at-the-counter joint specializing in sandwiches, salads and desserts, is under construction at 929 Franklin. That's just across the street from the Waco Tribune-Herald, which broke this news a couple of weeks ago, though it might have been slightly buried under all the stadium hoopla.
Galanis told me the name of the quick-serve place will be Alpha Omega and will be open for lunch and dinner. I asked if the gyros would be comparable to a couple of other places in town. He gave me a look that said "C'mon, man. Don't come at me with that weak stuff," and then he said, with an assuring smirk, "much better."
Alpha Omega is taking it slow and steady and doesn't plan to open until late this year or early next year.
One more bite: My friend Sydney Noh dined with me at 1424 and insisted we have the mussels you see in the photo with this blog. Good call, Sydney.
