The way I see it, we've traded the mysterious Al Miraj for the totally un-mysterious Old Fashion BBQ.
A couple of weeks ago, I was many, many states away from here when the Waco restaurant scene surprised me with the opening of Old Fashion on Franklin Ave. Not many things surprise me, but since Al Miraj surprised me 18 months ago, it stands to reason that its replacement would be able to surprise me too.
Upon returning to Waco, dining at Old Fashion was high on my list of priorities. I did so for the purpose of writing a blog.
Now, I want to loudly disclaim that this is not a review of Old Fashion. THIS IS NOT A REVIEW OF OLD FASHION. As such, I'm not going to compare it to other barbecue places in town. I'll merely say this: I would rather have a barbecue joint along my usual beaten path than an establishment where I wasn't likely to dine because I couldn't succinctly articulate what kind of food was served there (Al Miraj). This probably seems short-sighted, but I don't care.
I learned a couple of things while dining at Old Fashion.
It's the brick-and-mortar of the barbecue stand on Waco Drive, which was also called Old Fashion. The proprietors are related to the Pop Walton folks.
And they're having a grand opening celebration on the opening weekend of football season. That's Aug. 30 for those of you living under a rock. The party will include discounts and prizes and lots of good barbecue.
