News and notes: the calm before the fireworks

I noticed this afternoon that both the Xristo's and Mrs. Thompson's Cupcakes trucks were parked and closed.

The reason I noticed was I wanted to follow up on the Waco Trib's story on Mrs. Thompson's, the recently arrived dessert truck. But I understand how they would both need to take a breather on Monday. After all, it's probably going to be a hectic weekend for the downtown food truck folks.

Like every July 4, downtown is going to be active on Friday night. But since this is a pivotal year in our downtown scene's history and because July 4 falls on a Friday, it should be an electric atmosphere. I'm personally planning to hit the downtown scene unusually hard on Friday night and hope to see the food trucks out in full force. It's going to be a nice preview for what downtown might look like on football weekends in the near future.

Heading for the hills

Also reported in the Trib recently was the news that Twin Peaks is eyeing a mid-summer opening. I suppose we're going to have to include a new "Breastaurant" category to encompass both Hooters and Twin Peaks.

Anyway, your faithful restaurant blogger will take one for the team and, sigh, go for dinner and a beer at Twin Peaks to give you the low down when it opens.

Further recon

You know those big containers they use to hold the refuse when they gut a building? Well they can be found outside the old Lake Brazos Steak House and old Kim's locations. The old Lake Steak will be a Manny's Uptown Tex-Mex Resaurante.

The old Kim's is going to be a 1950s-style diner. Now that's thinking outside the box.

Two more bites: There will be a Jimmy John's in the new strip center across from Vitek's and possibly one more restaurant. Still waiting on the details there. ... There's a monster.com ad looking for full-time and part-time employees at a Cheesecake Factory location in Waco. We'll track this, but my guess is that this thing is a long way from getting here.
