Torchy's is here with a bang!
As I'm writing this, there's still about half an hour to get past Torchy's for a free opening-day breakfast taco. I claimed mine at 8:30 this morning — a chorizo, egg and cheese. Hit the spot.
But if you can't make it there this morning, not to worry. Let's not miss the big picture here: Waco has a Torchy's. Let's all take a second to pat ourselves on the back for living in a great town.
On Wednesday evening, hundreds of new Waco Torchy's patrons lined up for free food and drinks. I arrived with two friends in tow at five minutes until 6 for an opening event set for 6-9 p.m. By the time we reached the end of the line, we were past McAllisters, almost to Taco Bell. I had a bit of a sinking feeling, knowing that Torchy's was not in my near future. We were all very hungry and decided to take a wider, quicker road to food. And since I'll be out of town this weekend, it will be until next week before I have a Democrat and a frozen margarita (if you're unsure of the derivation of that phrase, just go to Torchy's and suss it out; you can thank me later).
Torchy's marketing director Brittany Platt estimated that 350 people were served before the event ended last night. Not everyone in line was able to chow down on free food. But WacoFork writer Dustin Payne was way back in line when I arrived and he reported that he was able to eat. Payne arrived at Torchy's about a quarter to 6 on Wednesday. Platt said the line began forming at 3 in the afternoon.
Platt also told me it was the best response Torchy's has had to a pre-opening event so far, and that by a significant margin. The response continued this morning as the line for breakfast tacos stretched out the door, though not through the parking lot like last night.
