You have to admire a restaurateur like Sergio Garcia for constantly trying new things.
Sergio, who formerly had Siete Mares and then briefly a taqueria on 4th street, now own Sergio's on Austin Avenue. Part of that venture has included experimenting with his front space. For a while, it was a breakfast counter/greasy spoon deal. Now it's Robin Jeep's Natural Cafe.
I spoke with Jeep this morning about the focus of her new venture. A dedicated chef, Jeep is attempting to combine healthy, diet-specific dishes while making them as tasty as possible. The kind of food that makes a person think it tastes way too good to be good for you.
For example, she treated me to a Monday special (sure, it was Tuesday, but it's the Tuesday after Labor Day, so same difference), which was a Mexican Bowl. It contained pinto beans, Mexican squash, Spanish brown rice, greens and guacamole.
Was it as decadent as a plate of steaming, greasy enchiladas? No. But it did have guacamole and I feel better about myself than i would have.
Jeep also showed me her book "The Super Antioxidant Diet and Nutrition Guide." This is the kind of book I should read. That's all I'm gonna say.
