Move over, New York, downtown Waco has arrived.
As of this week we have a hot dog cart, making it easy for downtown folks to get a quick lunch on the go. George Gaylord opened his hot dog cart, G&K Hot Dogs, on Monday at the corner of Austin Avenue and 7th Street.
I spoke with Gaylord this afternoon as I was delightedly purchasing a chili dog. He said G&K stands for George & Katie, he and his wife, and that he's always thought Waco should have a downtown hot dog cart. He said he got Jake Black, the owner of Jake's Texas Tea House, to sign off on G&K using the sidewalk just outside Jake's as a location.
My chili dog cost $3 and the Dr Pepper to go with it was an additional buck. Other than chili, G&K also offers sauerkraut. A hot dog without toppings is $2.
Gaylord said he will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. I had been to Dichotomy at Croft Art Gallery, just a block away, a couple of times this week, but didn't see G&K Hot Dogs until today. That's because the rain on Tuesday kept G&K from posting up.
I also gained some insight into the local food truck scene. Gaylord told me food trucks have to operate out of an approved industrial kitchen. He's using a facility on 4th Street to prepare his hot dogs and toppings.
