A couple of weeks ago, we updated the progress of the new shopping center on Valley Mills Drive. Brad Brown from Smashburger told us that they could begin outfitting their building as soon as the beginning of February.
The other restaurant going into that new hot spot will be Mama Fu's and I've checked into that as well.
The Mama Fu's restaurant offices, located in Austin, told us this week that they're on a similar schedule and will be opening in the spring.
I also dined at Mama Fu's in Georgetown last month to get a feel for what we can expect. I earlier wrote that it would be more comparable to Pei Wei than Panda Express when it comes to casual Asian dining.
It's definitely as well-appointed as Pei Wei if not better and the food might be better, based on my quick stop there. I was on my way to other activities in Austin, so I was there a little before 5 p.m. That gave me the chance to take advantage of Mama Fu's half-priced appetizers at happy hour (4-7).
Because they were half-priced, I ordered two — the Thai dynamite shrimp (pictured) and crab rangoons. They were great.
Mama Fu's has a couple of other interesting features. The use a flexible seating strategy. It's order-at-the-counter at lunchtime, while a server seats you and takes your order at the table at dinner.
And they deliver. No word yet on how much of Waco the Valley Mills location will deliver to, but the manager in Georgetown told me they have an extensive area there.
