Monday recon: free tacos tomorrow

Did anybody know Thursday is National Taco Day? I didn't until I read a press release sent to me recently by Taco Cabana. (A good indication that this WacoFork adventure is going ok is that I'm receiving unsolicited press releases from Taco Cabana.)

I personally think of most Thursdays as taco days, but if we need a day to nationally recognize tacos, then so be it.

Anyway, Taco Cabana wants to celebrate early by offering free tacos tomorrow from 5-8 p.m. They will be giving away chicken fajita tacos, to be exact, and no purchase is necessary. Even better, patrons will also receive a "Two Can Dine for $9.99" coupon. And it overlaps happy hour from 4-7 p.m.

Two new

Within the last couple of weeks, in the middle of a whole lot of restaurant news, two new places somewhat quietly opened their doors for business.

Cafe Vibrante on Valley Mills is now serving bistro-style lunches as well as retail olive oils and vinegars. They will be serving lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, while the olive oil and vinegar shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

And Jimmy John's opened its third Waco location in Bellmead, two doors down from Starbucks.

OTW

I'll have more on this later in the week, but a bakery and coffee shop is on the way just north of the river on Elm Street. Lula Jane's is making strides to open by the end of October.

One more bite: I saw the film Sironia at the Hollywood Jewel on Sunday evening. It was filmed in Waco and includes a whole bunch of Waco restaurants. I won't give away what they are because whispering to your neighbor "Oh, that's ..." is part of the fun. And it's a good story as well. Take it from someone who routinely walks out of movies.
