When I wrote yesterday's blog, enthusiastically proclaiming the high volume of dining and entertainment options available in our town this weekend, I had an annoying voice in my head telling me I would inevitably leave out something.
That little voice was right. I left out something that could be pretty cool — the launching of the Waco Downtown Farmers Market.
But that adds to my original argument that we live in a vibrant place. I wrote a long list of things going on and managed to not cram everything into it. So I'm taking credit for being right. See how that works?
You don't care. You want to know more about the Waco Downtown Farmers Market. So here's the 5 w's and 1 h.
The Waco Downtown Farmers Market, located near the intersection of Webster Avenue and University Parks Drive, will be a year-round farmers' market, open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
"The farmer gets a better price for his produce and the consumer gets a better product," market organizer Terry Vanderpool said.
How does this apply to Waco restaurants? A couple of ways actually.
Several local restaurants, including Common Grounds, Texas Cheese House in Lorena, Cafe Homestead and El Potosino will be participating as the market takes off with more restaurants potentially jumping in.
Less directly, Vanderpool believes there's potential to make connections between local farmers and local restaurants.
"We're hoping to feature some farm-to-restaurant type things," Vanderpool said. "The challenge is if you don't have the farmers, you can't do locally produced food."
Saturday's opening of the Waco Downtown Farmers Market promises to be a festive event on its own. Vanderpool said there will be 15-to-20 vendors set up, allowing market-goers to buy from local farmers and eat lunch while they're at it as hot dogs and tacos among other items will be available.
Hot dogs and tacos. That's me there then.
One more bite: Baylor Campus Kitchens will have a tent set up where market patrons can donate food to help feed those in our community in need.
