My friends Jeremy and Shawn and I have this sort of frame of reference that harkens back to our middle school and high school days. We observed back then that some of the guys on our football and basketball teams would assume someone new to the school (or on the opposing team) was awesome simply because they were from out of town.
In other words, unfamiliarity breeds awe. And in case you didn't catch it from the tone of the previous paragraph, we rolled our eyes at this thinking.
So I don't want to get sucked into that mind set at Saturday's Texas Food Truck Showdown. So right here, I want to acknowledge that we will have outstanding entries in the event. (btw, if this is the first your hearing about it, go here and/or here for complete details on the event.)
Having said that, here are five trucks from out of town that I'm looking forward to trying:
1. Burro Cheese Kitchen from Austin: My friend Jeremy Mercer vouched for this place's grilled cheese sandwiches, which prompted me to tell my sportswriter friends they made bada** grilled-cheese sandwiches, which prompted them to make fun of me for referring to grilled-cheese sandwiches as bada**.
2. BellaTrino from Southlake: I want to see how they stack up against 900 Degree Pizzeria.
3. Say Kimchi from Dallas: See above, but sub in Club Sandwich.
4. Stab It from Houston: I can't get a beat on this truck's genre, but apparently it's based on eating with toothpicks. Maybe? Anyway, that could make it a perfect fit for the contest portion of the event.
5. Urban Cowboy Southern Fusion from Austin: Go to this truck's site and tell me it's not basically foodie porn.
That's just a sampling. Hopefully it convinces you, if you had other plans, to cancel them and head for downtown on Saturday. And come see us while you're there. Here's the complete list of entries:
