Vegetarian Mexian food (aka vegetarian food)

Vegetarian Mexian food (aka vegetarian food)

Usually I don’t specify Mexican food as a food group in Texas, but refer to it simply as “food,” with other genres required to clarify. Don’t read this as a complaint; in my opinion the absolute best thing about Texas is breakfast burritos.

Today’s vegetarian picks: Mexican, aka regular food.

TAQUIERA EL CRUCERO: How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

The first thing you need to know about Crucero is that their green sauce is magic. If you hail from north of the Mason-Dixon line, you may not be able to handle the spice, but if you love flavorful heat, this sauce is reason enough to join the Crucero faithful. Tip: in the summer when their home-grown peppers are the hottest, don’t get pico + green sauce because it will burn your face off.

My burrito: Specify “grilled together:: (hand cut) potatoes, whole black beans, peppers & onions. Additional fresh ingredients: pico (or tomatoes in summer), avocado.

My (meat loving) husband’s burrito: Refried pinto beans, cheese, soyrizo. Yes, you heard that right – a soy version of chorizo. Really, chorizo is such low-grade meat that you won’t taste the difference in this veggie-friendly version: spice, protein, grease: all the things we love about chorizo sans heart attack.

ROSA’S CAFE: Taco Tuesdays Bean & Cheese Tacos

The cheapest meal in town doesn’t have to be carnivores only! Rosa’s will make either bean and cheese or guacamole tacos in the stead of meat filling, although in my experience they’ve been skimpy on the guacamole unless you’re looking over their shoulders. Disclaimer: I haven’t been able to get a straight answer about whether or not Rosa’s refried beans are cooked with bacon, but if you have inside knowledge let us know.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Cheesy Avocados

You might be seeing a theme here; avocados are my jam and if you don’t like them you’re living a half-life. Normally FFT stuffs them with chicken, but they’ll substitute black beans for a vegetarian option that I actually like better. Add to that cream cheese (optional), tomatoes, and olives – all topped with more cheese – and you’ll never order anything else.
